In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), the opportunity for personal and professional growth is greater than ever. Join me as we explore the significance of AI, share insights from my journey, and discuss how we can lead effectively in this transformative field.
Meet Kaye: A Journey Through AI and Leadership
Before we dive deeper into AI, let me introduce myself. I’m Kaye, a mother of grown children, a wife, and almost an empty nester as my youngest graduates this Saturday. My background includes:
- Retired Hip Hop Instructor: Dancing is ingrained in my blood!
- Crafting Enthusiast: I created a range of dolls during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Tech Lover: Obsessed with AI and data, I meld creativity with technology.
With over eighteen years at Oracle and recently stepping into an executive leadership position, I have a unique perspective on navigating the complexities of AI in the corporate landscape. I also share my journey as a social media influencer through my channel, imk malcolm.
The Evolution of AI: A Historical Overview
While AI is often viewed as a recent phenomenon, it has been around for over fifty years. Here are some key milestones:
- 2017: The pivotal paper "Attention is All You Need" was published by Google employees, introducing the revolutionary transformer architecture.
- 2021: The birth of Generative AI, which has transformed how we interact with technology.
Understanding this history is essential for us as leaders; it forms the foundation of our ability to influence and innovate within the realm of AI.
The Challenge of Integrating AI in Business
Despite AI's advancements, many executives still struggle to comprehend its implications. During my interactions with top executives, I’ve noticed a considerable knowledge gap surrounding AI applications:
- Many lack a clear understanding of how to utilize tools like ChatGPT.
- There is a staggering volume of available data—402 million terabytes generated daily—that remains underutilized.
- Executives express a need for a coherent data strategy that integrates AI by 2025.
To overcome these challenges, we must not remain passive; we need to lead from the front. I earned my AI certification three years ago to equip myself with the knowledge needed to provide clarity in this evolving technological landscape.
Creating Solutions Through AI
AI can streamline processes, enhance decision-making, and unlock new opportunities. As tech leaders, here are some considerations:
- Real-time Data Access: Trustworthy data is essential for making informed decisions.
- Data Integration: Understanding the different types of data—structured, unstructured, and semi-structured—is crucial for leveraging AI effectively.
- Business Alignment: Executives should focus on how AI can answer the pressing questions faced by the business.
Facing the Imposter Syndrome
As we embark on this technological revolution, it's common to feel like an imposter. However, it’s vital to recognize our potential and challenge those negative thoughts:
- Embrace your unique perspective and voice.
- Commit to continuous learning and embracing AI technology.
- Engage actively in discussions that shape the future of AI.
Let's aim to foster an inclusive environment where everyone, especially women, can contribute to the AI discourse. After all, whoever holds the pen of AI will shape the future.
The Road Ahead: Your Action Plan
As we look to the future, consider these steps to empower yourself in the realm of AI:
- Get certified in AI technologies and applications.
- Engage with communities that are focused on AI advancements.
- Participate in discussions and contribute to projects that highlight the use of AI in real-world applications.
Remember, the future of AI needs bold leadership—leadership that you can provide. Let's step up and make our mark on this transformative era!

So if we're going to spend this time together, we should get to know each other. Now a few housekeeping notes.I can see your chats, and I get real lonely. So if you'll drop in the chat where you're, coming from today, I'd love to know. Okay. So who am I? I'm a mother of grown children. I'm a wife. I'm almost an empty nester. My youngest graduates from high school this Saturday. Let's see. I party probably more than I should, and I'm a retired hip hop instructor. That's my class that you see on the screen. So, I mean, I have to tell you all this because if I start dancing, you know it's in my blood. I can't help it. Let's see. I'm also a big crafter. You can see those dolls that I made, during COVID. Now I am also obsessed with all things AI and data. Technology is my boot.
My brain, you know, it's it's equal parts creative and technical. I'm unique. I'm different, and I'm hella proud of it. Now I have a feeling so are you. I'm here to talk to you about how we are going to empower the future of AI together. Are you with me? Okay. Let's see. Oh, Greens from Dallas, Seattle, Washington. Hey, Dallas and Utah, Switzerland. Invite me. I wanna come back. Okay. Let's see. So I'm in year two of an executive leadership position at Oracle. I got this VP promotion and joined a group of masters. Right? Like, super experts of all things data. Now I've been at Oracle myself for over eighteen years, but some of my peers, they've been in those executive positions for a decade.
So I looked around to figure out, like, what's my so what? Oh, I should tell you that I'm also a bit of a social media influencer. I run a channel at imk malcolm where I try to be the person that I needed when, you know, ten, twenty years ago. So I'm your work bestie. Now anyhow, I wanted to set myself apart. Right? That's what I tell people on my channel on Instagram. So, they were talking about on TikTok, like, three years ago, this thing called ChatGPT, this lady that I followed. Anybody heard of it? Let's see. Anybody? Okay. A few of you. But in 2022, it was relatively unknown. Now I'm also a big problem solver. So when I looked around, right, I realized, okay, something new and kind of exciting is on the horizon and I wanted to be a part of it.
So what did I do? I rolled up my sleeves. I got off the sidelines, and we're gonna talk about that a lot today. It was time for me to get to work. So three years ago, I got my AI certification, and I wanna share some dates with you. So okay. I mean, you guys have been hearing this, I'm sure, all day. AI is not new. It's been around for over fifty years. Machine learning has been in the Oracle database for over twenty years. But in 2017, I don't know if you all know this, but there was a paper that was commissioned and written by eight Google employees called Attention is All You Need. Now what it did was it introduced a new architecture called the transformer and ushered in this era of deep learning.
So fun fact, that paper was based on, a song by the Beatles. Okay. But I'm I'm digressing. But it introduced the transformer architecture, which is the underlying architecture for most modern LLMs or large language models. Okay. So fast forward to 2021. Generative AI was born. Now why do I know all of these seemingly random facts and details? Well, if we as leaders, right, as chiefs in tech are to influence the direction of this new life shaping technology, right, we need to not just go on the buzzword bingo, but we really need to know it. And here's the reality. I travel all around the country. I just came back from, meeting one of our large customers in New York City and then hosting database world. But the things that I talk about are data and AI. And, you know, I'm I'm talking to CTOs. I'm talking to CIOs, SVPs of data science.
You wanna know what I find? I find that executives of these million and billion dollar companies, like, if you get them into a room, they really don't understand it. And, I mean, let's face it. Gen AI is new. Most of us didn't learn this in school. I know I didn't learn it in school. Now I was with one particular executive, in New York City last week, and he whispered to me I was like, okay. Kaye, can you help me use, anthropic chat, GPT, croc.ai? I have to be honest. I don't even know where to start. Now I'm not being judgy, right, if that's you. I was the same way. So what I what I did was I got certified in it. I started my journey because I knew that the benefit of the human for the benefit of the human race, it was important not for me to lead from the sidelines, but to lead from the front.
Now if you hang on, I'm gonna share with you the certification that I got. My husband got it. I made my son who is a intern at Oracle get it and my son who's graduating from high school. And I promise you that while you're studying, you can even message me on LinkedIn or Insta and ask me any questions. Why? There's very little practical application. There are hardly any how tos if you really start to go digging, right, past the basic fraud detection, create a basic chatbot. Knowledge is really limited. So how do you solve problems if there's little understanding if you don't understand? And that's where, I come in. We are going to embark on this journey together. Now if you're already on the journey, good for you. Keep listening.
I've got more for you because I'm betting you've never built a GenAI application from scratch in Python and Streamlit. So I want you all to drop. Oh, there's a question. Michelle has a question. What was the Beatles song that inspired deep learning? Love is all you need. Okay. So now I want you all to drop in the chat all the preeminent female voices that you are aware of in AI. I'll wait. Five, four, three, two, friends. That's a problem. We're 51% of the population. Where's our voice? More importantly, why is your voice not being heard? Whoever holds a pen of AI is literally going to shape how the world writes its future. So my question for you is, how come we didn't put your name in the chat?
Don't you wanna be a part of this for our children, our nieces, our nephews, our grandchildren? How many times per week are you posting about the GenAI application that you built on the world's most I mean, you guys know I work for Oracle. Most awesome database to shave months, days off of tasks that your company is doing today. If I say words like Euclidean distance, cosine similarity, can you tell me what that means? Thank you, Michelle, doctor Fei Fei Li. That's a good one. But there should be lots more, so let's go deeper. So people who talk about AI are really talking about Gen AI, right, in for the most part these days. And there is this genuine misunderstanding of technology. These models, right, LLMs that everyone talks about, think of them as very sophisticated autocomplete.
So if I say hello, how are, your brain thinks you. These models are trained to model the neural networks in the human brain. So the output infers you. Now in inferring, the next best word tends to be really, really a powerful thing indeed. And okay. So there are tons of tasks that generative AI you know, I'm I'm preaching to the choir. You all know all of these things that can accomplish. They range from writing, editing, grammar, style, creating code, and much, much more, especially now that we're in the world of agentic AI. But okay. We're chiefs in tech. So what does this mean for the business? And, specifically, I'm talking about your business. Well, consumers have different needs than the business. And you as executives, you should be worried about security, costs, governance. I saw that in one of the comments earlier comments, for one of the other sessions.
Now, there's also another big elephant in the room. No one really talks about it. Data. So that's why I'm here for you. Okay. I've got a fact for you. It's 402,000,000 terabytes of data, yeah, are generated every year, Kaye? Uh-uh. Month. No? Two weeks. Mm-mm. Every single day, an additional 402,000,000 terabytes of data are generated. So the data that we're talking about, it already exists. Okay. K. What does this have to do with me, and what does this have to do with AI? Well, I'm glad that you asked. There's a big problem, and I'm assigning you to solve it. So there was a survey, that was done at the December. It was a 100 executives, most influential companies, in the world. And they asked, what's your strategy? What's your plan for 2025? Now 86% of them said that they needed to have some sort of data strategy with AI integration in it. Right? This was a key goal for them.
Now of those who were surveyed, 99% of them, all but one, said that they needed to figure out, like, a solution that made it easier to create, to govern, and consume this data so that they could find value in their data. Now you, as leaders of your companies, you need to be able to trust your data. The reason why you bring your data to Gecker, right, why you're you're worried about your data, you should be worried about your tape data is because you want to ask broad questions that go across all the different business silos. That's when the data becomes super valuable and isn't just sitting there becoming a cost. And then what happens is your business becomes the preeminent bull in the arena. So the question facing these execs is, okay. I need real time data access to my data so that I can execute my vision and help answer the big question. What's the big question? And the big question tomorrow, it might change. And what should we be using to answer that big question? Well, AI. But here's the thing.
AI, it's a bit of a people pleaser. So if you don't give it real time data that you can trust, if that data is not secure, it has trauma so it wants you to like it. And so it'll start hallucinating and making up answers so that that you'll like it. So in its simplest form, right, you have data producers and you have data consumers. On the left, you have people in your company that are generating all types of data. Right? So if if we're honest with streaming data, relational data, unstructured data, raw data, data in Excel files, if we're honest with each other, you probably don't know all the data that your company is generating today. You probably don't know how much important data you could be missing. And so this data could come from party apps, EBS, NetSuite. It could be structured.
It could be, unstructured. It could be semi structured. It could be in just about any format. The average company has five to six different database systems, and that's just average. I've been to companies that have upwards of 10 or 11. Now these data consumers that we have on the right, these people, they wanna use the data to compete. I know that we're in technology. All they're looking for is to innovate. And some bad news, they don't care about the tech. Here's what they care about. I wanna ask this big question, and I want to use my data to answer it. Is it cloud data, on premise data? Who's the vendor? How fast is it? Where is it? They don't care. Just tell me, Kaye, how long will it take for me to ask the big question and get the answer?
And if that question changes from day to day, I need you not to say that it'll take you another two weeks to build a system that can help me to answer it. Now the thing that connects the data producers and the data consumers in the middle, that's the data platform. Now this is what the world looked like in 2022. When we fast forward, right, in the middle there with all of the advancements in GenAI, I can not only connect my data producers and consumers, but now I can use AI to help me ask and answer that big question. And with real time access to data plus AI, I get the most relevant answer to my big question. How do I do that? I do that with Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Database '23 AI. Now you're like, oh, we don't use Oracle. No problem. Right? Oracle is a query engine. So if you use any other kinds of databases, Oracle can sit in the middle and can help you answer that big question because AI is built in. Okay.
So let me show you some of some of the details because data, we've talked about this. Right? It is the lifeblood of the organization. And yes, yes, I know that's a very bold statement. I'm not saying that because I'm an executive at Oracle. I want you all to close your eyes for a minute. No. No. No. I'm serious. Close your eyes. Are you guys closing your eyes? Imagine your company does not have access to your data. Imagine that your data is not secure and not available. How about it takes your developers an additional 30% of their time to integrate between various data types in all of your database systems. Okay. Open your eyes. What are, the the thing that you should be focused on is not where your data lives, but how you can store all of your data in one place where your data can be accessed by AI, by your developers, where it's secure, where it's performing.
K? This is the main differentiator with Oracle. And the thing that I wanna share with people is Oracle stores all types of data, vector, graph, relational, blockchain, you name it. It can be stored in the same database down to the table and partition level. And before, you had to run it either on premise or in OCI. Well, now are you Google Cloud, Azure, or AWS? If you're building a solution tech, friends, right, you want to pick a solution that will grow with your company and with all these technologies. So I know you know, I I I want you all to think about the preeminent voices like Fei Fei Li. We couldn't really name many more.
Now I want you to imagine someone adding your name to that list. But before you do that, I need to tell you that if you're thinking, no. Okay. There's someone on my shoulder who's saying, I'm not the one. I shouldn't be the preeminent voice. There's somebody more experienced than me. There is someone who is better at this than me, and I wanna challenge you. I also struggle with that imposter who sits on my on my shoulder and says, Kaye, you're not qualified. When that imposter rears its ugly head, right, and it's so loud you can't hear anything else in the room, old Kaye would have given up try trying. If that's you, you are not alone. I want you to commit murder. I want you to kill that imposter. She's a hater.
Because if you seek to understand the technology, and we're all tech people, our brains can do this, then I want you to promise me that you are going to use your voice, solve the solutions, speak up in those board meetings. Because whether we are ready to admit it or not, we are literally in the middle of one of the biggest technological revolutions in history. AI is going to impact every area of our lives and every business. I want you to sit up off your chair. I'll wait. The future of AI, it needs leadership. Why? Because friends, you're the future. Thank you all. I have some, take a screenshot of this. This has certifications. It will teach you how to build a GenAI app, and more information about Oracle. And then I want you to connect with me. So if we're gonna murder that little imposter who says that you can't be the next voice of AI, I have some some reasons for you to not do that.
Thank you.
