Networking is a must for everyone and of course, for women and women in tech too. However, given the multiple priorities that women juggle, it sometimes becomes difficult for them to attend in person events. Virtual networking events provide a platform to break down barriers that often inhibit women's participation in male-dominated tech spaces. The virtual format removes the intimidation factor associated with physical presence, empowering women to engage more confidently and authentically. I've seen firsthand how women feel more at ease expressing themselves and sharing their experiences, leading to stronger connections and networking outcomes. Additionally, these events foster supportive communities where women can find encouragement, mentorship, and resources tailored to their needs. As someone deeply involved in fostering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry through my work with the WomenTech Network, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of virtual networking events, especially their role in reducing costs for participants. For women in tech, these cost savings are not just about economics; they're about opening doors to opportunities that were previously out of reach.

The elimination of travel and accommodation expenses is a game-changer. It democratizes access to professional development and networking opportunities, making them more accessible to a broader audience, including early-career professionals and individuals from underrepresented regions. This inclusivity is crucial for building a diverse tech ecosystem where everyone, regardless of their geographic or financial situation, can have a voice and an opportunity to grow.

Furthermore, virtual events offer a level of flexibility that is often missing in traditional, in-person settings. Participants can choose which sessions to attend based on their interests and availability, making it easier to balance professional development with personal and work commitments. This aspect is particularly important for women, who often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities.

This idea perfectly reflects the concept of LIFOW (Learning In The Flow Of Work) when new knowledge is acquired seamlessly and might be instantly applied.
Peer learning has got a myriad of benefits. What can not but be illuminated is the fact virtual networking events give us a chance to connect and build rapport with the adept and outstanding peers and leaders we don’t interact with on an ongoing basis.
Moreover, when we learn from the competent leaders of the sphere, we are highly likely to gain a fresh look at our situation or light may be shed on the cases that are up in the air.
Not to mention, when choosing the workshops and events to be attended, we may tend to choose the ones that meet our needs or even tailored to our goals.

It’s hard to think of many positive aspects for a global pandemic, but if I had to find any, the renewed importance of the “life” part of work/life balance would be one. Work is important - a source of fulfillment and independence - but it’s something we should do to live, and not what we live to do. After the Covid-era boom, remote work and events are not going anywhere!
That’s an important part of achieving work/life balance. If you work 9 to 5, but spend two hours on your way to work and back every day, that balance is already gone. Remote events for networking and professional advancement are another critical tool in allowing people, and women in particular, to better manage their time.

However, there are pitfalls to avoid at all costs. As things stand, women still shoulder most of the responsibilities when it comes to housekeeping and childcare. We’re moving towards more equal footing, but progress is slow; there is a very real risk that remote work and events may become an excuse to expect women to keep shouldering the lion’s share of household duties. If we’re to achieve true equality both at work and at home, male partners need to step up and do their share.
