Women bring unique strengths to cybersecurity—strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a natural ability to think outside the box. These qualities are crucial in areas like threat hunting, social engineering detection, and risk assessment. Take deepfake phishing attacks, for example. They rely on psychological manipulation, and women’s heightened awareness of behavioral patterns can be a game-changer in spotting anomalies. In SOC teams, women’s collaborative approach also strengthens communication, leading to faster and more effective incident response. The industry needs diverse minds to tackle evolving threats, and increasing female representation isn’t just about balance—it’s about building stronger, smarter security teams.

Because the trend in cyber needs in companies is 50% political + 50% technical, I think that cyber security jobs should be better segmented: CS jobs on the policy side (where female expertise predominates) and technical jobs (where male expertise predominates). The selection criteria for jobs should mix the conditions as little as possible. Ex. Although I have advanced certifications in Policies, I find many jobs as a Cyber Policy Consultant, which require Certifications and years of advanced technical experience. We are spinning in a circle! So many women cannot hold active jobs because they have just started their career in Cyber.

CYBER SECURITY INSTRUCTOR

As a female cybersecurity instructor, I see firsthand the urgent need for more women in our field. The cybersecurity landscape is rapidly evolving, and the threats we face are becoming increasingly sophisticated. To effectively combat these challenges, we need diverse perspectives and a broader range of skills. Women bring unique perspectives and approaches to problem-solving. In cybersecurity, where creative and innovative solutions are often required to address new and emerging threats, diversity in thought and experience can lead to more effective strategies. By increasing female representation, we can foster an environment where a wider range of ideas and solutions are explored, ultimately enhancing our ability to protect against cyber threats. Women often face unique challenges and barriers in male-dominated fields. By actively working to create a more inclusive and supportive environment, we can ensure that women not only enter the field but also thrive and advance in their careers. This, in turn, helps retain talent and reduces the turnover rate in the industry.

Cyber is a field where flexible schedules and remote work can be applied. BUT it is a very competitive field, which involves many certifications and laboratories. On a global level, there are barriers to overcome for a cyber woman 1. the cost of certifications 2. the language 3. advanced experience required for mid-level jobs. That is why it is more realistic to encourage high school girls and students to choose a cyber career, than women who are going through a reconversion / career update.

Enhancing Decision-Making

Diverse teams, including those with women, have been shown to make better decisions. In the context of cybersecurity, where the stakes are high, and the challenges are complex, having a blend of male and female perspectives can lead to more thoughtful, comprehensive, and effective security strategies.

Yes! lower risk appetite and the ability to listen to opinions can help in more inspired cyber decisions in the long term ... if the woman is a team manager. In Europe, women are allowed to have their points of view, but they weigh men's ideas more. We, the women, need a history of good ideas to gain more trust from the team/managers. I think this also comes from the fact that we have more structured ideas, and the cyber context is dynamic, spontaneous and surprising. So it involves similar reactions. As a psychologist, I always think that the attacks are mostly carried out by a male mindset. That's why I always try to learn from my male colleagues.

As economic security becomes intrinsically linked to our digital defenses, the people crafting those defenses must reflect the entire society they are protecting. Placing women in strategic cybersecurity roles ensures that our national defense and economic resiliency mechanisms are designed with a comprehensive understanding of risk and a mandate for inclusive protection. This intentional approach is the only way to build truly strong and resilient national systems.

This is valid as long as you face human-generated attacks. Today attacks can come from quantum computers or AI. So, we need something more than empathy. It takes: 1. a good knowledge of new algorithms 2. where do I get data from, 3. how it processes, what, 4. What? why? and for whom? I do it. Today we are talking about a digital psychology, even if without consciousness yet. And yes, women are very suitable for these deep levels of awareness and understanding, which require a lot of reflection and analysis of details.

The ability to integrate ethical and social considerations is arguably our most critical contribution to the tech world today. It’s imperative that our security measures and technical solutions—especially in high-impact areas like cybersecurity—don't simply function, but also uphold our societal values. By bringing a broader, more holistic perspective, women are instrumental in balancing technical feasibility with the core principles of privacy, fairness, and inclusivity. This approach ensures we build technology that is not just secure, but also just and equitable for every user.
