Careers in technology are rarely linear, yet many of us feel the pressure to follow a predefined path, from earning a computer science degree, to coding roles, to management. For women in tech, the journey often looks very different. Some enter the field after studying unrelated disciplines, some step away for personal responsibilities, while others carve niches in emerging areas that didn’t even exist when they started. These “non-traditional” routes are not shortcomings. They are differentiators that enrich our perspectives and strengthen our problem-solving abilities. Defining a unique career path begins with recognizing the value of our individuality. Instead of asking “How do I fit into the mold?” the question becomes “What combination of skills, experiences, and passions can I bring forward?” A background in design may fuel user-focused product development. An interest in psychology may spark innovations in AI ethics. Even time spent outside the workforce can sharpen resilience and leadership qualities. Each layer contributes to building a career narrative that is not only unique but also deeply impactful. But defining a path is only the beginning; navigating it requires strategy. Mentorship and sponsorship play a critical role here, finding mentors who understand our aspirations, and sponsors who advocate for us in rooms we are not yet in. Beyond mentorship, women benefit immensely from peer communities where we can exchange insights, share vulnerabilities, and celebrate wins. These networks often become the safe space where ambitions are nurtured and confidence is amplified. Visibility is another essential factor. Women should seek platforms to share their work and voices, whether that means contributing to open-source projects, writing for industry publications, or speaking at conferences. Recognition does not come from waiting to be noticed, but from courageously stepping into the spotlight. Each act of visibility not only advances individual careers but also inspires others to see themselves reflected in tech leadership. Most importantly, success in tech should not be defined by a single trajectory. For some, it may be reaching a C-suite role. For others, it could be pioneering research, launching a startup, or driving social impact through technology. The power lies in giving ourselves permission to define success on our own terms, rather than chasing societal or industry-imposed benchmarks. Women’s unique career paths in tech are not deviations from the norm, they are reshaping the norm itself. By embracing individuality, building intentional networks, and amplifying visibility, we do more than navigate our careers; we transform the ecosystem for those who follow.

A growth mindset isn’t just a strategy—it’s a lifeline. It’s what keeps you going when imposter syndrome hits or when a door closes. For women in tech, it means believing you belong, even when the room says otherwise. Every setback becomes a setup for a comeback. It’s not about knowing everything—it’s about being brave enough to learn, grow, and keep showing up.

✨ I love this topic! I could talk about it for hours, but I’ll try to keep it short. ✨ When I first became a Team Leader over 10 years ago, I had never read a single book about leadership. I was promoted without any training, and—like many first-time leaders—I made mistakes that impacted my team. I tried to do everything: answer every email, ensure no DNS went down, attend every meeting, and still deliver KPIs. The truth? It wasn’t working. Then something changed. A new company acquired us and forced me to read my first leadership book: Monday Morning Leadership by David Cottrell. It was a revelation. One line has stayed with me ever since: 👉 “The most important thing a leader can do is to make sure they keep learning.” That book lit a spark. From there, I picked up The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey, which opened my eyes to the power of a growth mindset. Here’s what I’ve learned since: 🌱 If you want to grow as a leader, you must carve out time for learning. 🌱 A good rule of thumb is to invest 20% of your week in your own development. 🌱 For women, this is even more vital—we often feel we must prove ourselves more, and learning builds the skills and confidence to speak up and lead with impact. 💡 My takeaway: Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about committing to growth—for yourself, and for your team.

Figuring out what you actually want from your career is such a key step, and honestly, not always easy. There’s so much great content out there now to help you reflect on what you enjoy, what you're good at, and what really matters to you. That mix can help you shape a personal vision for where you want to go. The great thing about tech is that it’s always changing, which means you’re not stuck on a single track: you get to define your own path. And that path? It’ll probably shift over time. That’s why it’s so important to revisit your goals regularly, especially during big life moments — like becoming a parent, changing roles, or simply realizing your priorities have evolved.

Defining and navigating a career path in tech isn't about following a linear ladder. It's about building a portfolio of impact, influence, and adaptability. Women in tech often face the dual challenge of breaking into rooms where decisions are made and making their value visible once inside. This requires both technical fluency and political intelligence. Your career path in tech has to be actively architected by you. That means defining what leadership impact looks like on your own terms, aligning your path with where the industry is going (AI, data, digital platforms), and refusing to wait for permission to claim space at the table. The most powerful move is to stop treating career growth as a solo climb. Demonstrate leadership early and often. Build coalitions, expand your influence beyond your current role, and position yourself not just as a leader IN tech, but as a leader shaping the future WITH tech.
