Build a Strong Professional Network

Networking plays a vital role in career advancement. Women can excel in AI and robotics leadership by building connections with both male and female professionals in the field. This involves attending industry events, joining professional organizations, and participating in forums. A robust network can open doors to mentorship opportunities, collaborations, and new roles.

A strong network in AI has two layers, and you need both. The first is the small inner circle the few people who will text you honest feedback at 11pm, who share your ethical lens, not just your job title. That's the layer that keeps you grounded. But you also need the wider circle: a broad network you actively follow, learn from, and stay current with. In a field that moves as fast as AI, you can't afford to be isolated. You need to see what others are building, read their updates, study their blueprints, and understand where the field is heading before it gets there. My advice: never hesitate to reach out to people you believe can help you grow most leaders in this space remember what it was like to be the one asking, and they respond more often than you'd think. Build the inner circle for depth, and the outer circle for breadth. The combination is what actually moves your career.

Develop Soft Skills

While technical prowess is important, soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are invaluable, especially in leadership roles. Women can stand out by honing these skills, ensuring they can lead diverse teams, manage projects efficiently, and articulate complex technical concepts to non-expert stakeholders.

Mentors provide valuable insights and advice, while sponsors can help elevate women into leadership roles by endorsing their skills and accomplishments.

Promote Yourself

Self-promotion is key to visibility and recognition. Women should showcase their achievements, lead high-visibility projects, and speak at industry events. Maintaining an active professional online presence, through platforms like LinkedIn, can also highlight their contributions and expertise to a broader audience.

Self-promotion feels uncomfortable for many of us, but I've found it gets easier when reframed as making your work findable for the people who need it. Someone out there is searching for the exact problem you've already solved staying invisible doesn't protect you, it just protects them from your help. In my work with the AI with Purpose community, I encourage members to publish one "lesson learned" per session, even if it's short. It's not bragging, it's documentation. Over time those small posts become the foundation of authority and they compound far more than a single viral moment.

Establish a Personal Brand

Developing a personal brand around one’s expertise and leadership style makes it easier for others to understand what you stand for and what you're good at. This can be through regularly publishing articles, sharing insights on social media, or speaking at industry panels and webinars.

When you build a personal brand, the most important thing is to stay honest. A brand should be your face it has to look like you. The moment you start imitating others, you lose the one thing that actually attracts people: your difference. People come to you precisely because you are not like everyone else, and because you give them exactly what you promise no performance, no mask. The strongest personal brands are spaces where the audience feels safe enough to be authentic themselves, because the founder dared to do it first. That has been my guiding principle in building the AI with Purpose community.
