Understanding the Power of Soft Skills in Achieving Success

Most people view success differently. For some, it might be related to career progression and monetary gain, while for others, it's tied to personal life aspects such as relationships or family. However, achieving a good balance in these different facets of life often results in people feeling content. Acquiring good soft skills or social emotional intelligence can significantly help us attain this balance.

About the Speaker

Yasna Perevi is the Director of Company Digital Beam. With over 20 years of experience in the IT industry, she has climbed the ranks from being a programmer to taking up managerial and directorial roles in Montenegro's biggest telecommunication company, which is part of the Deutsche Telecom Group.

The Importance of Developing Social Emotional Intelligence

Two years ago, Perevi made a significant career shift, stepping out of her comfort zone from a secure IT role to marketing. She discovered that possessing certain soft skills factored into her success in the transition. Leadership was one of her strengths, but she acknowledged the need to polish other areas.

Unlike cognitive intelligence, which peaks at around age 16, social emotional intelligence can be developed throughout one's lifetime. It is also measurable, allowing individuals to identify their strengths and areas for improvement to enhance their personal and professional lives.

Social emotional intelligence can be divided into four quadrants: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skills like communication and teamwork.

Recognition from Worldwide Institutions

The positive impact of social emotional intelligence in various aspects of life has been recognized worldwide. Institutions like UNICEF and the World Economic Forum have incorporated it into their programs. According to a study by the McKinsey Agency, there's a projected increase in the need for social emotional intelligence by 26% by 2030.

Key Skills Employers Seek

  • Communication: The ability to clearly express thoughts and ideas is crucial in any working environment.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Being able to contribute to a team and collaborate effectively fosters a synergy that benefits the entire group and the company.
  • Leadership: Although leadership might not suit everyone, it is a highly sought-after attribute in the job market.
  • Creativity and Innovation: These skills, tied to emotional intelligence, facilitate the generation of unique solutions and ideas.

Employers value technical skills as well, but a combination of technical and soft skills makes an individual more attractive in the job market.

Personal Fulfillment and Happiness

While the previous skills can enhance your attractiveness in the job market, Yasna Perevi highlights two skills as personally important for happiness—Personal Power and Networking.

Personal Power, akin to self-confidence, involves knowing and valuing your capabilities and achievements, and standing up for your beliefs and wants.

Networking, on the other hand, entails building and maintaining relationships that can potentially open up opportunities in the future.

In summary, developing social-emotional intelligence can not only bolster your prospects in the job market but also improve personal contentment and happiness. As Perevi concludes, personal growth occurs when we push ourselves beyond our comfort zone, continually learning and improving our soft skills.

My name is Yasna Perevi. I'm actually Director of Company Digital Beam. And I will tell you more about soft skills that you need in order to be successful. Uh But first of all, um you know, we should firstly define success. So uh success is not the same for uh all of us. For some of us, it's really connected with um performance at our work. Are we climbing on in hierarchy level? Uh What is our level of salary for some of us it's connected with uh private life. Uh Do we have partner? Uh are you married Children or so and so on? But for most of us, it's actually really complex and this is like a puzzle which consists of different pieces and when all these pieces are in good combination, then we say, oh I feel successful now. So it's they are kinda kinda complex. But um what is really important is that possessing good soft skills? Or I would rather say social emotional intelligence can help us with all this part of puzzles. And I will tell you about some competencies uh of social emotional intelligence that you really need to work on.

So first of all, why I'm here today. Uh I'm, I'm in it industry for more and 20 years and I started as a programmer, but I developed later on um in some uh managerial uh role and uh director role as well. So I was it director in biggest telecommunication company here in Montenegro, which is part of Deutsche telecom group. So that's one thing. But uh two years ago, I jumped from this position into something completely different. This, this was actually uh and marketing uh role.

Uh And for me, this was big exit from comfort zone. And then I became aware that actually I need to work more on some uh soft skills. Uh And for some of these soft skills uh or social emotional skills were good with me. It was leadership definitely, but I was liking some other skills. OK. So uh in comparison with cognitive intelligence, uh social emotional intelligence is something that you can work on your whole life. And uh this is something that should encourage uh all, all of us because it can have significant impact. And it's something that you can really develop. Uh because uh with cognitive abilities, you are somehow stuck there on uh when you are 16 years around it's developed and that's it. But social emotional intelligence, it can be developed for life and um uh it's measurable as well. So you can measure it and then you can uh uh find out uh where are your uh source of power and each elements of social, emotional intelligence should be further developed. Yeah, I mean, I'm sorry that I cannot somehow present uh my presentation. It's not working, but I hope that there will be possibility to share it later on. So I just try to, to speak about this. Um When we say social and emotional intelligence, it's actually represented uh in a quadrant, there are four pieces in this quadrant.

So first piece is uh self management. Um a self awareness, sorry. So see, self awareness, it's um are we aware of our emotions, how we are aware of um uh good sides or our strengths and our weaknesses? Uh And there is personal power uh and then it comes to self management. So that means uh are uh are in managing our behavior well, uh it's as well. Uh Stress management management is there and some other skills and uh another uh two quadrants are connected with social, social intelligence and there is um social awareness. So are we aware of uh emotions uh uh and situation that uh that we are so emotions of others? So it's empathy there and there is as well uh the social awareness and or situational awareness. Uh And uh in last quadrants are a very important communication, skills, uh skills connected with uh working in teams. There is leadership as well or so on. And why are we talking about importance of social emotional intelligence? Um it's because it's, it's found out that it is connected with uh and it has huge impact on different parts of our life. But uh it's not that only some scientists became aware of that, but it became somehow in, built in, in programs of UNICEF uh World Economic Forum. The first time in 2016, identified among top 10 skills uh uh social emotional intelligence.

And according to last uh research uh uh made by mckinsey uh agency, uh they made prediction and this is as well. Um This is as well um accessible on the page of World Economic Law. You can find this. There is a uh research which shows that uh social and emotional intelligence need to be developed by 26% in comparison to 2016 in 2030. So in 10 years from now, we really need to work on our social emotional competencies. So, uh besides this uh uh competencies, um there is creativity and innovation which need to uh jump for 9% and there are technical skills. So basically you are a ladies uh in very good position because you are possessing technical skills and these technical skills will be in need in 2030 60% more than that they are today. But um if you really gonna uh leave your full potential, if you wanna be successful in this, in different areas in your life, technical skills are not enough. So it's good that you possess them and basically you uh are attractive on labor market. But uh working on social emotional skills will help you help you to be more attractive on labor market and to be happier on your private life. OK. Um I will now mention um which skills employers are looking forward in their employees. So first skill is actually communication, skill.

And uh this is something that is usually said that uh we who are tech people are lack of. Uh I don't know for you. Uh Basically, I was good in, in this communication skills. Uh Somehow it was, it is one of my parents II, I would say so. Uh but I was really shy. So when I was a child and even throughout my university days, I was really shy. So although I could uh communicate my thoughts on a uh good way, uh I had issue to speak out. If you are having these issues as well, you should simply push yourself out uh from your comfort zone and simply communicate, you can practice this communication with people that you know, or at your workplace or among your friends, you simply speak out your thoughts, what do you think or so on?

Because this is something that is really uh among top uh uh competencies for um uh people who wanna be attractive on labor market. So uh if I who was really an introvert uh were able to manage and overcome this uh believe me, you can as well. Um You know, what is the worst thing that may happen if you simply communicate is that somebody won't listen, that somebody la uh um laugh to you. So what, so this is something that you should work on another uh uh social, emotional. This is actually social competence is uh teamwork and collaboration. Uh I'm mentioning uh this competence as well as a competence that employers are looking for. And why? So because even if you are good to doing something, uh if you speak about some project, then um employers are not happy that you are individuals who are only person working on that. Why there are several reasons. So if you are working alone, then you are even possessing risk for your employer because nobody else is knowing what you are doing. So that's one thing, another thing is that rarely uh there are situations that one project can be managed by one person. And third factor is actually that um there is energy effect. So there is synergy that uh are coming when you are working with other people. So, teamwork and collaboration is something that uh you should as well learn more and work more if you are not good in.

Uh And um third thing is leadership, of course, but for leadership, you need to think about whether you are really seeing yourself as a leader or not because it's as well connected. What do we really want? Hope? For life because some people like to be leaders and some people are uh are simply not happy to be in this position. So, although it's in high demand, this is something that you should think about what you really want. And there is this creativity and innovation which uh uh which belongs to emotional intelligence part. So if you wanna be attractive on labor market, communication, collaboration, teamwork, uh leadership and creativity and innovation are really in high demand. But now I wanna tell you something in use minutes that are left uh for my talk uh to mention two things that I would really like you to develop in order that you are uh happy. And this is something that probably your employer will not take you to work on, but it's important for yourself. And this is actually personal power. So personal power um is um uh uh competency, which is part of emotional intelligence. Um I can explain it because it's, it's mainly self-confidence. So if you are having self-confidence, um then actually, uh by all research, you are again, uh you are getting to better position, you know, in your life, privately or business wise.

And uh I wanna give you uh a tip how to develop this uh personal power or self-confidence. Uh Actually, there are two things that you should bear in your mind and you can as well look for this. Uh You can uh uh look out over internet and search for it. You don't need a real social emotional coach like I am to work on that you can as well investigate by your own. So first of all, look into asserting communication, asserted communication is important for communication, skill, but as well for personal power and it will help you to say no on really nice ways so that you don't offend anybody and that other people are not feeling well. Uh but uh it's about taking your standpoint and fight for what do you want. And uh this is a Celtic communication and other thing is you should build like an inventory of your achievements. So because we are having these best times in our life when we simply forget who we are and how powerful we are. And uh whenever you find out in this situation, you can simply uh recall of the moments uh when you were successful or about some achievements that you had.

So these achievements can be connected with your personal life, your business life, uh with uh your family members, with your friends, with your partner. Just uh think about this assessment, write them down at this achievement, write them down and recall of them. So this is something that you can really work on. And another thing is that is really, really, really important for you, especially for us women is networking. So some uh um uh research says that um that 60% of your business success is related with your networking skills and uh smoking, how to um increase your networking skills is actually if you are working, uh when you have a break, just have a cup of coffee with your coworkers, just have a coffee.

Uh good networking skills and good networking, help you to advance in your career and it can have tremendous effects. Basically, uh uh you can push each other so your network will help you. Uh and would like uh we'd like to see you in more in better roles in your work. So they will help you to do so. So just simply take a coffee with your coworkers instead of drinking it alone and it will have tremendous effects of your networking case. OK? Because we had technical issues. I tried to be really fast. So I didn't show you everything I planned for today, but I believe you my uh linkedin my linkedin profile and you can as well connect with me. And if there is any uh questions issues, you can as well uh ask me and the other thing as well. I'm going to leave you is um I'm currently working on an application that is developing social emotional intelligence. And uh uh it will be in September in better version. So it will be an app where you can uh develop your social emotional skills with like uh 10 minutes exercising per day. So if somebody is interested in, into uh having a first and free version of this app, it can apply to the uh form that I just shared. So feel free uh to apply. And once when it's ready, we will simply share this with you. OK.

Uh So basically that's it. If there is any question uh you can type in or send it, send it uh over my linkedin and I will be really happy to answer or as well on the slack. I'm sorry for the technical issues at the, at the beginning. But that's life. That's life. OK. OK. Joe. That's true. Self. Uh Self development. Yeah. And we can really do, do a lot about this and uh that's it. Yeah. Thank you, Malika. OK. It was my pleasure. I hope that there will be another chance to talk about this because I could talk for hours and um yeah, you're welcome. OK, I will as well connect with you on the linkedin. Yeah, definitely. They should stay connected. I'm going to connect with all of you ladies. Uh huh. How would you increase your networking skill if you are usually an introvert? I know that this is not then part of your comfort zone, but actually we are growing only when we are pushing ourselves out of the comfort zone. So just start with small steps. Uh So small step would be that you invite for a coffee or just a chat with a colleague from your work. Um Yeah. Uh If you like to try emotional intelligence app, you can just apply to the form I I gave you and I left a Google form or you can write me to, um, my linkedin and I can send you that.

It will be, I guess in September we are planning to, to bring it to life in September. Yeah, I was, um, I was introvert as well and it, it was something that was with me, uh, my, through my whole uh basic school, high school and UU university. But I would say that I was pushing myself uh out of this. And it started when I started working actually. So I've noticed that people who are good in communication, who are um uh good in presentation that they are somehow advancing more. Uh So I simply started to work on it and it was basically through uh reading books uh and picking some advices and then applying them. So currently you can, you can do your uh you can uh work on self education so you can uh read. There are a lot of content over internet. You can, you can read it, you can try out some things. Remember uh this assertive communication is something which is really important because it's building communication skills. It will help you with conflict management. But as well, it will boost your personal power. And what I learned as a uh woman uh leader is that uh personal power and this self awareness uh with us uh woman is um is often a problem. Yeah. So simply step out from your comfort zone and grow and then you will grow. It seems like we have more time for questions. I thought that this will be somehow ended like uh few minutes ago. But uh please ask more questions if any. Mhm. Yeah.

Basically we have like seven minutes more or six minutes more. Yeah. Uh ok. Then I will mention another thing as well Uh Because we have a few more minutes and it's resilience and it's actually uh uh skill or competence uh that will help you uh help you to recover from, from failure. So uh I didn't plan to talk about this today, but I think uh when I have time it's worth as well while of mentioning. So resilience uh it um you know, when you face uh when you face um a situation that you lose something that or that you are faced with a failure, uh we uh respond differ differently on such situations. So some of us are crying or become depressive, some of us are angry or why me, why it happens to me. But basically, but basically, uh uh we should uh build res resilience which will help us to uh uh step out from this uh this mood and to uh start to develop uh into new situations and, and the continue our life.

Uh uh So you ask, how do we apply emotional intelligence? And we are mad at other person. So it's uh part of emotional intelligence, which is, which is called um um uh self. So we are having this self-awareness, we are having self management. So this is self management. And uh you are um actually you are your own boss and you are the person who are choosing how to react. So you should be aware of that, this if you are losing your control. So then you are mad, then, you know, as the word says, when you are losing control, then somebody else is taking this control and this is something that you probably do not want to happen. And uh there are different ways how to do. So. So there is one old advice which is saying just come to 10, I believe that you heard for this. Uh It's simple but it's quite effective. So when you are mad, do not react immediately. If you are in a situation that you can control this, uh sometimes it easier, you know, when you uh receive an email or uh message uh text message, then you have a time to react. Do not write uh uh uh to other person, do not respond. Uh When you are feeling really mad, um you know, sleep over it if you have a chance or, or, or think more about it. OK? Uh And uh this is one thing, another thing is uh you know, you should learn to control it.

You know, you should learn, you should uh learn to control it how by practicing as well. What that means, recognize your feeling. So you are mad and other person, you know, be aware of this feeling. If you are aware of this feeling that you are already in good position to control your behavior because probably you cannot be uh control your emotions. So it happened. But behavior is something that can be controlled. Oh, Amber. I'm really glad that you like this fashion. Yeah.

Is there any other question? Uh huh. It's good, Anna. So don't promise when you are happy, don't reply. When you are angry, don't decide that you are sad. Sad. That's it. That's it. You know, uh if you ever do uh a test for so uh for measuring your current level of social emotional intelligence and uh which will be as well part of this app that we are developing, um you will notice uh your strengths and your weaknesses and guess what, what do you think?

Uh what you should uh once when you have this best results, what should, what should you do and deal first with your uh with your uh compete with competencies that you are uh really good at or those that, that you are um having issues. So what do you think if you do a test of social emotional intelligence, uh which competencies, you should first look into those that you are uh in power or those that you are having issues, what do you think? Ok. If somebody is thinking that, that you should first look into those that you are good at, you are right? Because they are a source of your power. Yeah, actually, and it's not those with your issues because, but first you should be aware of your strengths if you are aware of your strengths and if you are, if you are aware of yourself, uh then you are in good starting position. So first you should reveal your good sides and then you should deal with issues. Good thing that I said already about social emotional intelligence is that you can develop it through your whole life and then you should uh deal with uh you should make like a plan and define your priorities.

So should you first, if you are having issues with communication skills, skills, should you work for uh uh work with them first with communication skills or maybe you should uh work with something else? Oh, thank you, Manola. Yeah, Flavia, I know that it's not um it's not always easy, but actually it's connected with these communication skills as well. You know, assertiveness, please, please uh look into into assertiveness all because now we don't have time to talk more about this. Uh It will help you to state what do you want. Uh But on the way that you approach others with respect and as well to earn respect from others, it's a certain and uh what is very important that uh uh if you practice this, if you practice this, uh you will become more better over time and you will really advance into it. I remember when I learned uh to control my behavior more. It's once when it happened, uh when I was uh like trainee, I just started working and uh it happened that one colleague like offended me. And uh and I said to my boss um uh that I lost control, you know, when, when he did so and then he told me that um I should listen my own words. So if I lost control, then, then I gave my power uh to somebody else.

And that I should think about this situation about giving my power to somebody else. And, you know, uh it really helped me that each time I, I recognize uh I recognize the moment that I'm going to lose my control and saying no, I'm not going to, to give my power to somebody else. And I think again, Anna, you, you can write. Actually, even when you are face to face to face, there is a few seconds that that can make a difference, it can really make a difference. So you are mad, you should recognize uh source of your madness. So why, what made you mad? Just give a few seconds for yourself. And as well, you have right to not answer immediately. You know, even if, if immediate answer is asked for you and you are mad or you are feeling something else, you know, you have a right to say, uh look, I need to think about this more. I I need to think so. So that's your right as well. Uh uh Very often we are put into a situation that we feel like we are pushed into doing something. And this is, this is again about losing our power.
