Session: From Teacher to Technologist

I would like to share my story of how I started off my "adult" career as an educator and ended up starting an Open Source Program Office at Fannie Mae. There are so many commonalities within teaching and program management within technology that we can apply in all our day to day work functions and beyond. I also address fear in change when shifting into something brand new which can cause the dreaded "imposter syndrome" and how one can overcome this. This talk is designed to inspire anyone that wants to make a life career shift into something new and guide people through ways to manage the shift.

Bio

Brittany Istenes started off her career as an elementary/special education schoolteacher in West Philadelphia. Seeing the need for a stronger technology presence in education, she transitioned from the classroom to an educational technology company.

Brittany was most recently an Open Source DevRel Program Manager at Comcast. One of her priorities was the delivery of OSS through the company and beyond as well as a sharp focus on Community. She led the Open Source Advisory Council which consisted of compliance lawyers, patent/strategic IP lawyers, engineers and security to evaluate all Open Source contributions and new projects that came through the company.

She also championed the Open Source Ambassador program for Comcast engineers. Another was the Open Source Fellowship program which focused on getting developers to dedicate 25% of their year on Open Source Software tooling. Finally Brittany created the Comcast internal InnerSource Guild which guided teams through best InnerSource practices.

Now at Fannie Mae, Brittany is hopeful to share these best practices for OSS and InnerSource with the teams at Fannie Mae. The main goal is to create a frictionless developer/centric environment where not only are we creating the best products for our customers, but we are doing so in a way that is better, faster, secure and more innovative within the FINTECH world.
