Session: Applying the learnings from updating the hiring process to day-to-day processes of engineering teams

Over the last few years tech companies have aimed to address a lack of diversity in their engineering staff by looking into the recruiting and hiring process. These changes such as structured interviewing and standardized rubrics allowed for a more objective view of candidates moving through the process. This has led to an improvement not just in diversity statistics but also an improvement in the quality of hires. This talk discusses ways of taking these learnings and applying them to day-to-day processes for engineering teams with the aim of improving the day to day processes to achieve similar results.
This talk looks into two areas, PR reviews and team best practices and attempts to find a way to use some of the techniques that were successful in updating hiring practices to make day to day work have less friction and more throughput. It discusses some of the potential causes for this friction and lack of throughput and discusses concrete practices that can be applied by any engineering team.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the benefits of applying standardization to the PR Review process
  • Understand the benefits of a common understanding of team practices
  • Understand the impact to the team of allowing individuals to define processes without full team buy-in
