Session: Risk is Relentless. Strategies for Managing Risk

In working in technology and with people, there is a lot of risk. There is risk in procuring the right resources; risks that things will happen in the world that we don't expect, Risks that certain types of errors will happen.
All kinds of risks.
During the workshop, I will share tools and tactics to help you know which risks deserve attention. We will discuss the following:
Collecting Risks
Evaluating Risks
Prioritizing Effectively
Addressing Risks

Key Takeaways

  • We never know which risks are going to come to fruition, but we can leverage our team and stakeholder's knowledge to get a better sense on which risks we need to prioritze and address.
  • Stating your risks in an 'If x, Then y' format allows your stakeholders to clearly understand the severity and impact if a specific risk were to happen.
  • Team members want to share the various ways that things can go wrong; give them the right mechanism to do so.
  • It's common to focus on the severity and likelihood of a potential risk. Detectability is an important point to consider as well. If we cannot detect that a risk is going to happen, it's potentially a risk that we need to prioritize over others.
