Session: Results are in - the most effective ways to close the Gender Gap in STEM!

56% of organisations believe Gender Diversity in STEM to be one of the top three priority for their company - on par with work life balance. This number is surprisingly positive, but still begs the questions – are organisation doing enough? Almost everyone is satisfied with recent improvements in the STEM industry, however almost everyone still thinks we have a long way to go.
At PA, we decided to pose the question differently. Despite all these initiatives and talks, ‘are organisations focusing on what is most effective?’.

PA Consulting Women in Tech latest’s research surveyed 300 decision makers in STEM roles, also including HR and DE&I leaders from mid-sized to large companies, to assess satisfaction rate, the remaining challenges and ultimately find out the most effective yet feasible actions to attract, recruit, retain and retrain women into STEM roles.

During our talk we will reveal the astonishing results from our quantitative research, which will be brought to life with real case studies emerged from our qualitative interviews.

- To what extent are men more satisfied than women when it comes to Gender Diversity is STEM?
- How does this satisfaction level change from middle to senior management?
- What are the biggest remaining barriers to Gender Diversity in STEM? And who’s responsible for removing them?

Our research has provided strong data and qualitative information behind all of the above questions. It has also brought to lifen what companies can do to drive change most effectively. In our talk we will cover the most feasible yet effective actions to:

1. Attract Women in STEM: spoiler alert > when ‘attracting’ external women in STEM, the most effective thing you can do is to drive transparent inward change
2. Recruit Women in STEM: spoiler alert > when ‘recruiting women’ into STEM role, companies need to experiment with new routes and schemes. BAU won't work.
3. Retain Women in STEM: spoiler alert > to avoid a leaky pipeline, change starts from the top
4. Retrain Women in STEM: spoiler alert > this dimension is somewhat forgotten but can drive the some of the biggest change.

During our presentation we will talk about how companies can put these actions into practice, also covering top tips for dos and donts.

The talk is aimed at senior leaders in the STEM industry who want to make a change. However anyone passionate about the cause is encouraged to attend. Attendees will be able to take away:
1. A data and expert driven view of the state of the industry
2. A clear set of actions they can implement in their company
3. Food for thought around intersectionality between gender, LGBTQ+ and race

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the state of Gender Diversity in the STEM industry: satisfaction rate, remaining challenges, and perspectives
  • Understand a data driven view of the most effective actions to Recruit & Attract Women in STEM
  • Understand a data driven view of the most effective actions to Retain & Retrain Women in STEM
  • Create a plan to tackle the issue of lack of Gender Diversity in STEM within your organisation
