About the Role
The Springer Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.
In this role you will take responsibility for the running and editorial development of a list of journals across applied physics, materials science, and related fields in the physical sciences. This will involve close liaison with external academic Editors, engagement with the scientific community to keep abreast of new projects and research directions, and using this knowledge to take concrete actions which keep the journals at the forefront of scientific endeavour.
You’ll work closely with editorial colleagues and collaborate extensively with other departments such as production, marketing, sales, and market analysis.
Role Requirements:
- Portfolio management: Manage and strategically develop a portfolio of 8-9 journals in applied physics and materials science
- Content acquisition: Acquire high-quality content in close collaboration with external journal editors and internal commissioning team
- Stakeholder engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with editors, reviewers, authors, and the broader research community
- Editor recruitment: Help identify new editors to add to editorial boards and nurture them through their training and development
- Author outreach: Actively promote journals through social media channels and other activities that help drive content to portfolio
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with internal teams to ensure the smooth running and growth of your journals
- Performance monitoring: Track KPIs and contribute to achieving annual targets (submissions, publications, turnaround times)
- New journal launches: Work on team to analyse and plan for new titles within an established series. Help draft proposals for new journals and implement if proposals are approved.
- Representation: Represent your portfolio at conferences, meetings, institutional visits, and other events (in-person and virtual)
Qualifications:
- Academic degree in the physical sciences, PhD preferred but not necessary
- Previous experience in academic publishing
- Fluency in English, both orally and written
- High level of computer literacy
- Excellent communication and influencing skills
- Ability to work on your own initiative and independently within a (virtual) team environment
- Positive and proactive approach to problem solving, taking ownership to drive and complete tasks
- Strong organizational skills, including proven ability to consistently meet deadlines
- Must be willing and able to travel when appropriate and required, also internationally
- Editorial experience desirable but not essential
