About GRIT - GENDER RIGHTS IN TECH
GRIT – Gender Rights in Tech is a women-led South African nonprofit advancing gender justice through technology, education, advocacy and community-led innovation. Founded by Leonora Tima and formerly known as Kwanele, GRIT works to prevent gender-based violence and improve access to safety, healthcare, support and justice.
GRIT addresses the barriers people face when seeking help: fear, stigma, language, limited information and systems that can be difficult to navigate. Its approach connects practical digital tools with community relationships, legal partnerships and survivor-centred support.
The GRIT App brings together emergency features, evidence preservation, legal guidance and support referrals. Zuzi, its multilingual WhatsApp companion, provides accessible information on sexual and reproductive health, emotional wellbeing, violence and rights.
Beyond its technology, GRIT delivers digital safety education, facilitates community workshops, engages schools and young people, and works with service providers to strengthen responses to violence, including technology-facilitated abuse.
Women, young people and survivors help shape this work through co-creation, testing and ongoing feedback. Their lived experience informs the tools GRIT builds and the issues it addresses.
GRIT’s purpose is to make rights usable in everyday life—so that access to safety and justice does not depend on someone’s language, location or ability to navigate a complex system.
