Building Inclusive Networks

Creating strong, inclusive networks is key to effective mentorship among women in STEM. Such networks provide not only practical guidance and resources but also emotional support and solidarity. "You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for our own improvement and, at the same time, share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful." This quote by Marie Curie emphasizes the responsibility of individuals to contribute to the improvement of others, which aligns with the role of mentors in guiding and supporting mentees in their STEM careers.

What has worked for me as a mentor is understanding 1. Mentee's current need 2. Mentee's current problem statement 3. Mentee's current situation at office and home 3. Devising a collaborative plan for an improvement and change, next following through the plan to make adjustments based on the status at the point of time to achieve the goal. You can use SMART framework and periodic check-ins with the Mentee. Mentorship is not a one way road rather is a continuous process but rewarding one, some times Mentees give up and so need a cheer leader to help them move the needle. Once an Mentee moves the needle, it gives immense joy to Mentor.

I have been a mentor since some time now, 3 or 4 years. I fully agree that this is an enriching experience for both sides. A win for both sides, an exchange of knowledge, expertise, experience. All my matches have been a success so far! I am enjoying each mentor experience with my full heart. As tech people, especially women are my clients, I fully support your opinion that women in tech need a lot of support, encouragement, empowerment to handle themselves and their way through tech. They need to know that there is someone there when they need or they doubt. They need a safe space to share, doubt, ask. As I noticed, one of the hardest thing is to be visible, to allow themselves to be visible, shift and build a strong mindset that they are amazing. However, mentoring is a dance too! So it depends on their perspective and expectations.

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. Resilience and adaptability are soft skills I highly encourage women to have, and mentorship can fast track acquiring these.

If you haven't heard yet, a strategy to accompany acquiring a growth mindset is to adopt a 'Yet' Mindset: Add "yet" to statements about your abilities (e.g., "I can't do this yet"). This is you training yourself to shift the focus from a fixed state to a potential for development.

From my perspective, I do not believe in ”exclusivity”. I believe in inclusivity. It is true that male and female, male and female brain are functioning and reacting differently, however an opposite perspective is supportive too. It can help to see what it is not seen, to better understand and connect with those around you, and stop spiraling. I deliver a workshop about male and female brain. In my audience, there are both male and female. And it is always a surprise to see them, at the end of it, with a complete understanding and approach. And a relief that it is not personal, or misogyny, it is about how we are wired and how we integrate it.

From my daily practice, work balance is very desired, but also difficult to achieve. Or to keep the balance or to find out where the balance is for you. Hard question: How to accommodate both? You might feel split. Or not good enough. Judging yourself. A whole narrative is developing inside of your head. And taking over. What I can share and noticed is that it is about boundaries, besides prioritisation. And then, clear goals, for both personal and professional life, so that you know exactly what you can accommodate and how, milestones and then a reward. Next is to establish a routine. It is not a universal recipe, as we all are unique. The most important is to experiment and check what works for you! And, instead of perfect, focus on progress.
