Unlocking Your Leadership Voice: A Guide to Developing a Powerful Presence
Welcome to a journey of self-discovery and growth where we will help you develop your powerful voice. In this article, we’ll explore the significance of *your voice* in leadership and effective communication. Whether you are a seasoned leader or just beginning to explore your potential, understanding and honing your voice can significantly impact how you engage, unite, and inspire others.
Understanding the Importance of Your Voice
Your voice is a vital tool that shapes perceptions and influences people. Many individuals focus on leadership and communication skills but often overlook the power of their voice. This can lead to missed opportunities for connection and impact. Let's delve into how developing your voice can transform your leadership capabilities:
- Increased Confidence: As you refine your voice, you’ll feel more confident in your abilities to lead and speak up. This newfound confidence will draw others to you.
- Calm Under Pressure: A powerful voice embodies calmness, which is essential in today’s chaotic world.
- Authority and Influence: When you speak with authority, people listen. Your voice can command attention and respect in any situation.
Key Qualities of a Leadership Voice
While every leader's voice is unique, certain qualities resonate deeply with individuals. Here are the key qualities of a leadership voice summarized using the acronym A.C.E.:
- A – Assertiveness: Being assertive helps you convey authority and respect. An assertive voice ensures your message is clear and definitive.
- C – Calmness: A calm voice can diffuse tension and create a sense of reassurance among your audience.
- E – Empathy: Your voice should express understanding and compassion, allowing you to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
Overcoming the Challenges of Vocal Expression
Many individuals struggle with their voice under stress or emotional situations, leading to changes such as:
- High-pitched tones
- Trembling
- Speaking too fast
So, how do we overcome these challenges? The key lies in proper breathing techniques.
Mastering Your Breath
Effective vocal expression starts with breath control. Here’s a simple exercise to enhance your breathing:
- Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest.
- Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your stomach to expand rather than your chest. This engages your diaphragm.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth, contracting your abdomen.
Repeat this exercise daily for 1-2 months to build a habit that will improve your vocal quality.
Using Your Breath to Convey Emotion
Once you've mastered your breath, it’s essential to use it to express emotions. For instance:
- To express assertiveness, emphasize keywords in a firm tone: “The proposal is final.”
- To convey empathy, soften your tone and lower the volume towards the end: “I understand your situation.”
These techniques will help you manage your emotions and connect more effectively with your audience.
Conclusion: The Journey to a Powerful Voice
Developing your leadership voice is an empowering journey. Remember the core principles of assertiveness, calmness, and empathy. Practice your breathing techniques diligently, and apply the emotional expression tips to become a more impactful leader.

Thank you everyone for choosing to join my session, and the session is going to help you develop your powerful voice. Okay. Very good. So, now it's right at the hour, and we are going to start. Okay. So I'd like to welcome everyone and, make sure that you are in the right session. In the next twenty minutes, we are going to discover how you can develop your voice and your especially your leadership voice so that you can engage, unite, and inspire people. And when we are talking about the voice, it's really your physical voice, your voice mechanism. So, for those of you who have just joined, let me know that where you are calling from. Thank you everyone for joining. So we have twenty minutes together, and we are going to discover your voice. And, of course, you want to know who you are talking who is talking to you.
Okay. Thank you, everyone. We also have, Sahar from Germany, Charlotte from Barcelona, Anika from London, more joining us, and also, Melbourne, Australia, New Jersey as well. Thank you, everyone. I think for those of you who are joining in from The States, it's, quite early. So I I appreciate everyone from, joining early. France as well. And, Czech. Also, I saw Switzerland. Thank you, everyone. So who is Cynthia? So, this is what you are seeing now, but you didn't know that I didn't have a powerful voice. So I had to work on my own voice and, to in order to be heard, to be seen, to have a powerful voice that sounds assertive so that people can listen to me so that I can lead as well. So that's what you're going to learn today. Not only that, what has helped me for the past so many years to go from, someone who was not assertive to someone who is assertive, who is powerful, to be able to speak with a powerful voice so that, I can lead better.
So that's what you're going to learn. And, also, I would like to share with you quickly to see how the voice has helped others. So, most people, probably all of you have worked on your leadership skills, communication skills, but voice has been the area that most people have overlooked. And, also, when we do work on the voice, how could voice help you? So I'm going to show you a few quick examples. So for example, David, once he worked on his voice, he noticed that he was able to have a higher comp level of confidence to lead. And, David is from Singapore. And Genevieve, Jenny, he she is from, Philadelphia. So not sure if she has any fellow Philadelphians here. And, she found that now when people challenge her, she felt so calm. So, also for Chi based in Australia. So I saw someone from Australia.
So, Chi, she realized that once she was able to speak with a powerful voice, people wait for her to speak as a final say. If she doesn't say anything, people feel that they're not sure yet. So, then also, Belinda, based in Malaysia, she realized, oh, now people when she's saying something, people just go and do. So she had the authority in her voice. So that's how much you can change in your voice. And, to help you speak with a leadership voice, so I wonder how does a leadership voice sound like to you? So quickly type into the chat and let me know how does a leadership voice sound to you sound like to you? So let's see that.
What is your understanding so far? Thank you, everyone. We have more coming from, France, Czech, Ireland as well. Okay. Thank you, everyone. Calm, collected, no use of filler words, calm and in control. Very good. So I've I'm so glad to see that all of you, realize a calm voice is important. Yes. Especially in today's chaotic, uncertain world. Okay. Very good. So, all these are the qualities we are going to find out how to develop. Okay. Very good. So, I am, surprised and also not surprised that, nowadays, more and more people realize that the leadership voice needs to have the calmness. Okay. Very good. Direct, steady, confident, compassionate, thoughtful, intentional. Okay. Very good. So, there are so many qualities. Are we going to develop all of them, or are we going to discover how to develop them?
So, in fact, I am going to, in order to help you, easy to remember, I am summarizing all the qualities into an acronym, and the acronym is ACE. So as a leader, we have two ACE. So a c e. They are actually the qualities a lot of you have mentioned. So, a was not mentioned much. So, but a let's see if you can guess what is the a. So each of the letters, they represent a quality. Oh, okay. Very good. Thank you, Sahar. It's, very quick. So, a is assertiveness. That's also, the quality that I needed to develop before I became a leader. So assertiveness. And, I think a lot of you have already mentioned. So even if I don't review the c and e, a lot of you have mentioned the quality already. So, but to keep you guessing a little bit, I'm going to review them later. So assertiveness.
Now we are in this conference, we are also talking a lot about AI. Right? Are you afraid that AI will replace your voice? So, if you feel okay, it will not replace me, you can type one. If you feel maybe it will replace me, type zero. So we do a quick, typing chat, typing a poll. So do you think that the AI will replace us or it's not? Okay. Very good. So, Joanna said no way. Yes. And so AI will not replace the voice because there is one very important thing that AI, so far, they couldn't do yet. And what is that? That is your emotion. Okay. Very good. So as Sahar mentioned empathy. Yes. So AI, at the moment, it doesn't have empathy yet. It doesn't have emotion. And emotion is something that you cannot ignore when you're speaking. The right emotion will help you convey the right impact.
And, also, today, when we are talking about assertiveness and, not only the emotion that AI cannot replace for you, the other thing that AI does not have and probably will never have, and that is how we help you convey the emotion. So emotion, have you noticed? When you are having different emotions, the way you breathe is different. Did you notice? If you notice, you can type again one. If you didn't notice, type zero. Okay. Very good. Yes. So when we are having different emotions, the way we breathe is different. When we are angry, our breath was shallow, and fast. When we are more calm, the breath is calm as well. So in order to improve your voice, in order to express the different emotions, we are actually working on the breath, the breath. So, here, the breath will help you with all these three qualities we're talking about. A, assertiveness, c, a lot of you have mentioned is the calmness, the calmness.
How do you have the calmness in your voice? Brass is the foundational step. And the c and the e, e, a lot of you mentioned as well, is empathy, empathy. So all these three, they need to work on your breath. So we want to know for the past twenty one years or eighteen, forever twenty one or eighteen. For the past twenty one years, we want to know whether you have been breathing properly. If you are not breathing properly, you will realize when you are emotional, the voice will go high pitched or speak fast or maybe even trembling. So how many of you noticed that when you are getting emotional, when the emotion is not in better control, your voice having these problems, going high pitched, trembling, or high pitched?
So, type into the chat. So which, quality not good quality did you have, when you are emotional? So when you are supposed to sound calm, your voice is not. So how do we overcome that? Okay. Thank you, Joanna. And the Sahara is, trembling or shaking. Yes. Trembling a lot. Clear high pitch and warpy. Yes. So you'll notice. Yes. When you are nervous, the voice is also trembling. So how can you sound calm now even if you're not feeling calm? This is very possible. You can sound calm without feeling calm. So, isn't that something you want to learn? The key is, number one, breathe properly. Number two, make proper breathing a habit. So you cannot just learn the breathing. If breathing is not a habit, your voice will still tremble. It will still go high pitched. So we are going to find out whether you have been breathing properly.
So, what I would like you to do, I cannot see you, so you're going to observe your own proper your own deep breathing. So I I'm going to have you do a deep breathing. And when you do the deep breathing, observe which part of the body is moving. Okay. So let's, have you do deep breathing and observe where is the movement in your body? Once you noticed, quickly type into the chat. Okay. Chest is moving. Some of you ah, okay. Jessica noticed diaphragm. Probably failed diaphragm. Stomach, belly, chest. Okay. Okay. So I'm going to do a quick demonstration. So probably I'll stop the record sharing first so you can see better. So if you were breathing in this way deep breathing in this way, so when you are breathing in, chest and shoulder move up and belly is moving in.
And when you breathe out, there's good news and bad news. So the bad news is you are not breathing properly for twenty one years or more. If you so, the good news is you'll have potential. So we're gonna see where the potential is. I am going to do a proper deep breathing. You'll see where the movement is. So I'm going to do the proper deep breathing. Okay. Already finished. Some of you are probably still waiting. You may not notice anywhere moving. Right? So one more time. You see if I'm doing the deep breathing, proper deep breathing, you didn't see any movement, because okay. Very good. So, some of you are already guessing is on the stomach or abdomen. Yes. So if you are doing this one, I'm gonna show you. If you are doing this one, it's the wrong way of breathing. But the proper one, you see, if I now your movement, observe the movement here.
When I take deep breath in, deep breath out, You see the movement is here, right, on the stomach. And it's the opposite to what you're doing. When I breathe in, my tummy is coming out. When I breathe out, tummy is going in. So one more time. See, when I breathe in, tummy out. When I breathe out, tummy in. Ah, so isn't it the opposite to what you're doing? When you are breathing in, your tummy is in. When you breathe out, tummy out. So you have been breathing in the exact opposite way. That's why your life is upside down. So we're going to help you turn your life around. Okay. Very good. So, Natasha, I mentioned this, the diaphragm. Yes. So when you are singing, you are probably doing this. So, we don't have time to cover why you're why you're not doing it correctly.
Of course, in one word in one word is because of the tension, because of the stress we have been accumulating over the years. All we care about is how can we do the proper one and make the proper one a habit. So, what I want you to do is you're just going to put your hand on the this area. So this is where the diaphragm is, and we're going to practice this breathing exercise on a daily basis for about one and a half to two and a half months until it becomes a habit. Only when it becomes a habit, then your voice will be more calm. So we're going to do this exercise on a daily basis. This is what I call kung fu breath. So are you ready to practice kung fu breath? Put your hand here. The other one is just put it aside.
We are going to start from correcting our breath out, which is push the stomach in so the air can come up through the mouth. So I'm going to demonstrate. So you can do it with me. Then stomach will come back, which is inhalation automatically. One more time. Okay. So I assume you are doing it. Any questions on this kung fu breathing exercise? Okay. Let's see if you can answer. Yes. Jessica mentioned, is it why? Yes. That is the reason, unfortunately. Okay. Any questions on breathing practice? If not, then we are going to, use the breath. Okay. Amariz met asked where does this breathing originate from? It is originating from the bottom of your lungs, the bottom of your lungs. So, because of the time constraint, we don't have time to go through all the theory. So that's why I would recommend you to, watch my videos. On YouTube, I have more than 300 views.
Just go to YouTube and search Cynthia voice coach, Cynthia voice coach or my full name. You should be able to find my channel. So, there are some videos that I go through the theory. Or you are welcome to join my, free classes. So there are some free webinars I do sometimes. Come and join. So here, I want you to do this exercise first. Do this exercise on a daily basis so it can become a habit. Only when it becomes a habit, then you will start it to have the benefits. But right now, even if it's not a habit, let's practice some exercises with the breath to see how you can use the breath for emotions. For example, let's try this sentence. So the sentence is the proposal is final. We want to convey firmness and assertiveness. So how would you say that sentence? Try it.
As you try it, I am going to demonstrate as well. So it's most likely be like this. The proposal is final. The proposal is final. So you see, we put more breath on the word final. So that's how you convey all these emotions, similar emotions. So find a keyword and use more breath on the keyword because when you use your more breath, it associates and activates your emotion. Have you thought about it? So the the emotion is being activated by the breath. So they work both ways. When you have emotion, your breath changes. But when you work on the breath, it helps you activate the emotion as well. So these are all the emotions you can activate by using more breath, more breath on the keyword. Now we are going to try another sentence working on empathy.
So what do you think is empathy? How do we use the brass for empathy? So show you this sentence. We would not say this sentence like, I understand your situation. That's too far. Right? So, that is not, empathy. So in order to show empathy, it's almost the opposite as the firmness. So it'd be more like, I understand your situation. I understand your situation. So you see how we use the breath? Our empathy, quickly type into the chat. Okay. So, how do we did you ah, okay. Softer voice and softer voice on a keyword, and the keyword is understand. I understand your situation. Yes. Very good. And and, Kita. And okay. Very good. So arm raise also notice lower pitch. So one key, bonus one key bonus is the sentence volume is becoming smaller. If you say, I understand your situation.
If the volume doesn't change towards the end, the empathy is not there. So it's I understand your situation. So on situation, the volume becomes smaller as well. So and that is how we convey not only empathy, but also all these emotions. Empathy, caring, compassion, and reassuring. If you want to reassure people in chaos, this is how you use the breath to activate those emotions as well. So now you notice, wow, working on the breath can help us not only activate the emotions, but also manage the emotions. So, that will be one key thing you want to remember for today. Even if your breath is not proper yet, we will also help you using the breath. Even if your breath is not proper yet, it will also help you as well. So, we don't have time to cover more. I would love to connect with you.
