I want to speak from my own perspective, and specifically about something I’ve been facing recently: the idea of becoming a mom, and the very real fear of what it could mean for my career. It’s a feeling that, in many ways, is unique to women.

I keep coming back to something Indra Nooyi, ex CEO of PepsiCo, once said: that the biological clock and the career clock are in total conflict. It might sound obvious, even a cliché, but I haven’t been able to forget it. Just as you’re getting ready for that manager role, just as the promotion is within reach, that’s exactly when motherhood arrives.

What I do know is that being stuck should only ever be temporary. When you’re no longer learning, no longer being challenged or no longer growing, that’s the sign it’s time to move. No one gets anywhere or real fulfilment by staying in their comfort zone.

I think the professional side of this has already been covered well by the great insights shared here. I would only add one thing: your personal situation matters too, and it’s okay for your priorities to change over time. And maybe career stagnation isn’t always a setback. Sometimes it’s a sign to move things around and find something that better fits where you are in life.
