Continuous Learning and Skill Upgradation

To overcome career stagnation, women in tech should prioritize continuous learning and skill enhancement. Career stagnation is not always caused by a lack of skills or ambition. Sometimes, professionals continue to perform well but receive few opportunities to take on greater responsibilities or contribute to important decisions.

I believe women in tech should focus not only on improving their skills but also on understanding how those skills translate into business impact. For example, a data analyst can go beyond preparing reports to explaining how insights can improve business decisions.

It is equally important to assess whether the workplace offers a genuine path for growth. Clear promotion criteria, constructive feedback, and opportunities to work on challenging projects can help professionals identify their next steps. If these opportunities remain unavailable despite consistent effort, exploring a different team or organization may be worth considering.

Of course, career growth is not solely an individual's responsibility. Organizations must also address barriers such as unequal access to opportunities and unclear advancement processes.

The key is to recognize whether you need to develop new capabilities, demonstrate your existing potential differently, or find an environment that gives you room to grow. Working harder matters, but knowing where to direct that effort matters just as much.

To overcome career stagnation, women in tech should prioritize continuous learning and skill enhancement, focusing not only on technical skills but also on leadership and communication capabilities. While staying abreast of the latest technologies, programming languages, and industry trends is crucial, it's equally important to develop a strong personal brand and network within the industry.

By actively seeking out mentorship opportunities and building relationships with other professionals, women can gain valuable insights and support, which can be instrumental in navigating career challenges and opportunities. Additionally, embracing a growth mindset—where challenges are seen as opportunities for learning rather than obstacles—can empower women to take on new responsibilities and roles that push their boundaries.

Enrolling in online courses, attending workshops, and obtaining relevant certifications will undoubtedly enhance their technical skill set, but pairing these efforts with the cultivation of soft skills and strategic career planning can position them as indispensable leaders within their organizations. Speak up. Showcase your work. And lift others with you.

One thing I have learnt is that women need to speak for themselves — and showcase their work at the right time, to the right stakeholders.

Too often, we go quiet when someone tries to overpower the conversation. We let our work speak for itself, hoping the right people will notice. Sometimes they don't.

Advocating for yourself is not being loud. It is making sure your contribution is visible and understood.

And I believe advocacy doesn't stop with us. Speak up for the women who deserve recognition even when they are not in the room.

We grow by growing others around us.

Today, we also have AI productivity tools that can help us document achievements, organise our work and present impact clearly. Use them. Don't leave your story for someone else to tell.

Career stagnation in tech often isn’t about lack of capability—it’s about staying too long in spaces that stop challenging you. I’ve learned that growth needs to be pursued as deliberately as delivery. During my own phases of transition, I stayed invested in learning, writing, and engaging with the industry—even when I wasn’t actively working—and that kept my momentum alive.

What really changes the curve is visibility and voice—speaking up for your work, your ambitions, and sometimes, for your next role before it’s offered. Stagnation breaks when you stop waiting to be recognized and start positioning yourself to be unavoidable. And sometimes, the most strategic move forward is the courage to step sideways—or even out—for a while, and return stronger.

I want to speak from my own perspective, and specifically about something I’ve been facing recently: the idea of becoming a mom, and the very real fear of what it could mean for my career. It’s a feeling that, in many ways, is unique to women.

I keep coming back to something Indra Nooyi, ex CEO of PepsiCo, once said: that the biological clock and the career clock are in total conflict. It might sound obvious, even a cliché, but I haven’t been able to forget it. Just as you’re getting ready for that manager role, just as the promotion is within reach, that’s exactly when motherhood arrives.

Yes, it feels unfair. But I also can’t stop rethinking the whole career I’ve built for myself with so much effort, and the idea that starting a family means slowing down.

The truth is that our personal lives will always affect our work. It’s impossible to keep them apart. Maybe when I come back from maternity leave, I’ll realize I don’t love my job anymore. Or maybe the opportunities I’m putting on pause now are simply going to come later, perhaps at a moment when I’m more ready for them.

What I do know is that being stuck should only ever be temporary. When you’re no longer learning, no longer being challenged or no longer growing, that’s the sign it’s time to move. No one gets anywhere or real fulfilment by staying in their comfort zone.

I think the professional side of this has already been covered well by the great insights shared here. I would only add one thing: your personal situation matters too, and it’s okay for your priorities to change over time. And maybe career stagnation isn’t always a setback. Sometimes it’s a sign to move things around and find something that better fits where you are in life.

Engage in Strategic Job Hopping

Sometimes, the best way to overcome stagnation is to change the environment. Strategic job hopping involves moving between companies or roles to acquire diverse experiences, broaden skills, and increase earning potential. Women in tech should evaluate their career goals and consider job hopping as a method to accelerate career growth, especially if opportunities for advancement are limited in their current role.

Embrace Risk-Taking

Innovation and progress in the tech industry often require taking risks. Women should be open to stepping out of their comfort zones, whether that means taking on challenging projects, embracing new technologies, or starting their own ventures. Risk-taking can lead to significant career advancements and open up new pathways for growth and learning.

Advocate for Inclusive Policies

Last but not least, advocating for more inclusive workplace policies is key. Women in tech can play a leading role in initiating conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion. By pushing for policies that support career advancement for all, they not only contribute to a more equitable workplace but also open up new opportunities for themselves and others.
