Overview

We’re looking for a curious and passionate Data Scientist that will help our customers discover the information hidden in vast amounts of data to sense, make sense, and act in the Information Environment. In this role, you will work autonomously to find creative solutions and tackle challenging problems with cutting-edge technology. Priorities, tasks, and team structure may change rapidly between sprints. We’re looking for somebody who thrives in such an environment. The role is not a fit if you value "business as usual". Responsibilities

  • Work with our subject matter experts and engineers to turn prototypes into scalable, production software
  • Work with our advisors from Harvard, ensure we are employing the best methodologies to address important, meaningful problems
  • Be responsible for projects that span statistical and mathematical reasoning, business communications and leadership, and computer programming
  • Deliver insights on existing initiatives and come up with innovative product growth opportunities
  • Experiment with a range of data science techniques to produce insight, including machine learning, deep learning, network analysis, sampling methodologies, text analytics in multiple languages and data visualization
  • Explore and extract value from out database of over 100 million documents
  • Use ML to perform various classification tasks at the document and author level
  • Use Neural Networks and other techniques to leverage our unlabeled data
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate the integrity of our data sampling and data collection strategies.
  • Build prototype tools to help our SMEs extract insights from our data
  • Use statistics to give SME insights a robust mathematical backing
  • Participate in strategic discussions about the direction data science should be taking the company

Additionally, as a part of the Data Science team you’ll have opportunities to work on projects that expand your skills, learn from peer mentors, and iterate internal research and development. You may experiment with a range of data science techniques to build tools and produce insight, including machine learning, network analysis, sampling methodologies, multi-language NLP, and data visualization.

  • You’ll work with our customers and internal experts to understand their problems and creatively identify and implement solutions in the form of models, tools, or one-off analytics.
  • You’ll be responsible for projects that span statistical and mathematical reasoning, business communications and leadership, and computer programming
  • You’ll leverage state of the art open source techniques and tools like LLMs to deliver value across our customer-facing and internal product suite, including quick turn notebooks or applications for analyst use.
  • You’ll work with our Product team to advance the product roadmap and bring ideas and new field developments to expand our market advantage.
  • You’ll design and execute experiments to evaluate the integrity of our data sampling and collection strategies as well as the accuracy and utility of our models.

Here are some of the skills you’ll need to dive into the role:

  • Technical
    • You have 2+ years experience in a Data Science role (or 1+ with a PhD), including 2+ years experience with Python programming language (Intermediate-level or higher).
    • You have experience with common Machine Learning libraries (PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).
    • You have a good understanding of statistics, including familiarity with statistical tests, distributions, and maximum likelihood estimators.
  • Project Leadership
    • You’ve scoped and planned data science projects and have the ability to creatively navigate technical limitations, iterate to solve hard questions, and learn quickly and independently.
    • You prefer to lead solutions for ambiguous tasks and complex problems, and are capable of independently providing solutions that fit within the business strategy.
    • You propose pragmatic solutions that are as simple as possible, which sometimes mean that no neural network or Gen AI component is necessary.
    • You’re interested in working remotely on a distributed data science team with a diverse set of skills and life experiences, while embedded in a product team as owner of data science innovations to the product.
  • Communication
    • You’ll deliver frequent written and verbal communication to both technical and non-technical customers, including participating in meetings with a multitude of stakeholders (e.g., Product, Engineering, Operations, Management) where you’ll be expected to communicate in a crisp manner. Mastery of English is required for this role, including communication at all levels of technical expertise.

‘Nice to have’ expertise to highlight in your resume 

  • Strong quantitative background with Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Economics, Engineering, or similar field. Master’s degrees preferred. PhD even better.
  • A significant share of your experience in direct support of military or intelligence community customers, demonstrating progressive technical development and mission-focused outcomes
  • Experience with any of the following: Generative AI or NLP, building or tuning neural networks (especially LLMs), database experience (e.g., ElasticSearch, Snowflake, SQL)
  • Familiarity with software development procedures/tools like Agile, Git, and Jira
