Sowmya Kumar Bio
Sowmya is a passionate data science leader with industry experience developing machine learning models at scale in production from inception to business impact. She was the founding member of data science team at Microsoft Devices, building strategic data science roadmaps and successfully executing them for multiple years with strong business impact and now part of Data science at Azure Supply Chain. She developed deep learning and machine learning modules for solving the demand-supply inventory forecast, customer level forecasting, labor optimization problems that handles seasonality, transition/ new products, marketing-promotions etc. She has experience brining applied science into different aspects of Marketing, Supply Chain & Retail. Prior to Microsoft, she was at Starbucks and was part of data science team in marketing where she was part of building customer segmentation for targeting offers to drive revenue, A/B experimentation to drive revenue and customer engagement.
Sowmya applied statistics, machine learning when data scientist title wasn’t even a term, during the initial years she continued to pursue her passion in data by teaching herself Machine Learning, Deep Learning through online certifications and continue to apply them during the day job by bringing business impact. She is passionate about data science and AI. She inspires students outside Microsoft by giving guest lectures on Neural Networks, Deep Learning in University of Texas, El Paso, University of Washington, Department of Computer Science. She recently published a paper on NLP Techniques and also writes for Data Science @ Microsoft on medium. She has presented her work in MLADS (Machine Learning conference internal to Microsoft that happens 3 times a year) and also published two research papers on Deep Learning in MSJAR( Microsoft Research Journal). She is part of jury for research journal, conference proposals and also the General Chair in Microsoft Machine Learning community. She has been awarded “Women to watch out for in AI & Analytics-2022” by 3 AI India’s largest AI Community
