Session: Coaching or Mentoring? What should be your stance?

Coaching and mentoring are both forms of developmental relationships that aim to support an individual's growth and development. However, they differ in their approach and focus. Coaching is a structured and results-oriented process where a coach works with an individual to help them achieve specific goals. However mentoring require more hands-on experience sharing. This session will explore the benefits of both mentoring and coaching, how to decide when to apply which, and how they can be leveraged in various roles. At the end of the session, you will get many useful tips from boths end of the table, as a mentor/coach and mentee/cochee.

Key Takeaways

  • Coaching is structured, systematic and result oriented. The cochee is responsible for setting the goals, working on them and reaching the result. Coach asks powerful questions to guide the cochee to progress.
  • Mentorship requires expertise on the topic and it's hands-on. It's valuable, when the mentee have theoretical knowledge but needs help with application.
  • There are some ques when to decide, which "stance" you should have. If you are a "padawan" you can ask for coaching or mentorship according to your needs. If you are a "Yoda", you should able to differentiate both guide your "Padawan" accordingly.
