Session: Product Inclusion: Why You Need to Build WITH Not FOR

Building for a diverse and inclusive audience is a good thing, but do you know why? Is it simply to feel good about the product you ship? Did you know there are tangible business metrics that can be positively affected by intentionally prioritizing underrepresented users? In this talk, you will learn what Product Inclusion is, why it should be integral to the product development life cycle, how to make a case for it in your org or team, and some simple ways to start building inclusively.

Key Takeaways

  • Product Inclusion is not just about doing good but can present tangible business implications for product owners, from expanding your market to growing revenue to innovation
  • Everyone has bias and mitigating that bias in product development is a core responsibility for PMs. Building with empathy is not enough. We must actively increase the diversity of perspectives feeding into the product development life cycle.
  • Product inclusion is not a step or milestone, but rather an on-going process that will show more success the earlier it is introduced. The intent is not to create more work or slow the process but to intentionally build products that are inclusive.
