Session: Breaking the Rules: How Interledger Succeeded with Open Source in Finance
Open Source in finance is often framed as risky—raising fears around security, regulation, and competitive advantage—but these debates also reveal deeper questions about power, access, and who gets to shape financial infrastructure. This talk examines how Interledger challenged
closed, extractive models by intentionally building open technology, shared governance, and a global community around trust and collaboration. By unpacking the strategic, technical, and social choices
behind this journey, the session argues that transparency through open source is not just a technical decision, but a societal one—unlocking innovation, interoperability, and fairer participation in the digital economy.
