Session: Feature Flag Use Cases You Haven't Heard About Yet

Feature flags are gaining a lot of traction and many of us are familiar with using them to roll out new features.  However, there's a lot more that they can do. In this talk, I will very briefly revisit some of their standard use-cases.  Then we'll talk through a number of the more creative use-cases that we've used them to solve.  Come learn how you can leverage feature flags to help remove dead code, test the parity of new code, evaluate the cost of a new technology, and more.

Key Takeaways

  • Basic overview of what feature flags are
  • Some unusual use-cases including removing dead code, parity testing and more
  • Some real examples of how we’ve implemented some of these

Bio

Joy is a Principal Software Engineer at Split, leading our backend team from a technical perspective.  Prior to Split, she worked at Box. At both Split and Box, she has lead efforts around splitting monoliths into microservices, revamping authorization frameworks, creating REST API standards, audit logging and more. In addition to designing software and writing code, she also maintains a blog: https://medium.com/@jkebertz.  In her free time, she does a lot of traveling, reading, and running ridiculously long distances (mostly on trails).
