Session: Letting Go of the Perfect Resume

Early on, we have a vision of the perfect career and how it will evolve through the years. However, COVID and its associated challenges with layoffs, remote work, and keeping spirits up have brought other plans in many cases. Embracing her fourth job in the last two years, Kaeli O'Connell, Marketing Programs Manager at OneScreen.ai, has learned how to let go of her perfect resume. Despite unprecedented challenges, she has accepted the fact that career paths aren’t always linear and has moved forward with a rewarding career that is setting her up for advancement. Her resume is not focused on the length of tenure at each company, but rather the positive impact her work has had on each company.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn the important elements that go into making the decision that's best for your career growth, not the best decision for the company or what you think future employers want to see.
  • Layoffs are a reflection of the market, not on you, though they can do a job on the psyche. Learn how to move beyond a layoff so it doesn’t impede your career.
  • Startups have different rules. The idea of needing to be at a company for at least two years doesn't make sense because many startups fail or get acquired. Learn how to focus on the work you did and the impact you had that matters to future employers.
