Session: Does Your Prompt Harm the Planet? Exploring Generative AI's Environmental Impact
As generative AI transforms our digital lives, its environmental impact remains largely invisible to most users. Every time we prompt an AI chatbot or create a new image we’re using energy and water, but how does this compare to traditional computer use? In this session, I'll review what we know about the emissions produced by AI systems and whether they deserve the label of environmental disaster that some critics have given to them. You'll learn about the biggest users of global energy demand and see how AI compares to other digital services you use regularly. We should all be more informed about our digital footprint and how we can use AI in more responsible ways without missing out on the innovation happening in the tech world.
