Session: Building Smarter Communities: Using AI to Transform Waste Segregation in Urban Living

In rapidly growing urban environments like Bangalore, waste segregation remains one of the most persistent challenges in gated communities. In this lightning talk, Krishna shares how she engineered an AI-powered waste segregation app that helps residents correctly identify and dispose of waste using real-time image classification. The session walks through the technical architecture, including the full‑stack build, model training, deployment pipeline, and security considerations. Attendees will learn how accessible AI tools, thoughtful engineering practices, and user-centered design can turn everyday community problems into impactful, scalable solutions. This talk demonstrates how software developers can combine innovation with social responsibility to create meaningful change.

Key Takeaways

  • How AI-driven image classification can solve real-world community challenges.
  • Practical insights into building and deploying a full-stack, cloud-based AI application.
  • The importance of high-quality data, user experience, and continuous model improvement.
  • Inspiration to identify everyday problems and transform them into impactful tech solutions.

I am a full‑stack Software Engineer at Visa with a strong focus on secure, reliable, and scalable application development. With hands‑on experience across the entire technology stack, I build end‑to‑end solutions while integrating modern DevOps practices to ensure smooth delivery, automation, and operational excellence. In addition to core engineering work, I am actively involved in application security, performing penetration testing, identifying weaknesses, and driving vulnerability remediation efforts across critical systems.

A dedicated Toastmaster, I have cultivated strong communication and leadership abilities, developing a confident presence in front of audiences. While still early in delivering formal talks, I have extensive experience as an MC and event host, known for bringing energy, clarity, and connection to the stage.
