Session: Navigating Negotiation: For Yourself, Your Team and Your Organisation

At every stage of our careers, we need to negotiate on behalf of ourselves and others for time, resources, even salary. As the global economy slows, and budgets are tightened, being able to negotiate effectively becomes even more imperative. Yet the research tells us that due to unconscious bias, women are often penalised for daring to initiate negotiations, especially in male dominated industries like Technology, particularly when it comes to salary negotiation. Sadly, the techniques that work for men (who make up the majority of mentors and role models in Tech) often backfire when used by their female counterparts. This 20-minute talk highlights the unconscious bias at work in negotiation, 3 key ways organisations can remove systemic barriers so that women can negotiate successfully and how individuals can use evidence-based techniques to get what they need.

Key Takeaways

  • The hidden biases that impact successful negotiation
  • A framework for addressing these biases to negotiate for what you need
  • Three things' organisations can do to remove systemic discrimination for women in Tech to ensure they can negotiate for what they need successfully

Natalie is an experienced executive who coaches and facilitates teams to navigate the challenges of today’s ever-shifting, ever-accelerating landscape. Natalie supports leaders and organisations to co-create thriving cultures and propel purpose-driven growth. Her practice is firmly rooted in the belief that inclusion is at the heart of creating sustainable value for all stakeholders, and unlocking the full potential of organisations.

She creates environments where leaders feel both supported and challenged, to boldly explore the tougher questions, dismantle preconceptions, find new perspectives in the discomfort of paradox, and transform the way they interact with the world.
