Session: Turning Lived Experiences into Tangible Solutions: How a Personal Fertility Journey Inspired Innovation

One half of the world’s population is women. Women also account for 80 percent of consumer purchasing decisions in the healthcare industry, yet only 1% of healthcare research and innovation is invested in female-specific conditions beyond oncology, according to McKinsey and Company. This was something that Dr. Neta Gotlieb experienced firsthand as she navigated her path of fertility and pregnancy. In this talk, Dr. Gotlieb will share her fertility journey and discuss how her experiences with miscarriage and high risk pregnancy illuminated the absence of data, information, and research in the science and medical world and the lack of available consumer solutions to self-monitor during pregnancy. Ultimately, this led her to the Oura Ring, which enabled Dr. Gotlieb to track her physiological metrics throughout pregnancy and inspired a big vision for wearable technology in the reproductive space. After reaching out to the company to share her vision, Dr. Gotlieb was hired to spearhead reproductive health research to contribute to innovative women’s health solutions. She will share how her research has evolved throughout her time at Oura, and how she plans to continue using her background as a Clinical Research Scientist to expand the scientific knowledge base and improve Oura’s user experience.

Key Takeaways

  • Inspiration from personal experiences can lead to effective, positive change.
  • Reproductive health research and solutions are improving, but there is still more work that can be done.
  • Wearable technology is a powerful tool for monitoring female health conditions and will continue to develop into a more effective solution as the science behind it evolves.
