Session: Women’s Leadership in Times of War: A Ukrainian Entrepreneur’s Story

I am a Ukrainian entrepreneur - CEO, and Founder of BetterMe company, headquartered in Kyiv. With the outbreak of war, the BetterMe team faced the most challenging crisis, and the pandemic against this backdrop seems like just a preparation for today's harsh reality. But even during this year of the war, BetterMe continues to grow - the number of employees and financial indicators are increasing, with the team we launched a couple of new products. How did we do it?

One of the biggest secrets to surviving a crisis of any size - is strong leadership. The most important thing I’ve learned as the Founder and CEO in 2022 is to take hold and control my emotional state and use it to drive actions.

When a crisis strikes, it is especially important for a leader to take off the fear and provide energy to the team, making it clear that your employer is ready to help you. Thus, in the first days of the war, we helped our employees to move to safe places.

Leadership in the case of a crisis is crucial to making sure that employees understand what a team is trying to accomplish. And the leader is responsible for ensuring the team stays on track.

Meanwhile, everyone should be prepared that with the onset of the crisis, the business model could change dramatically, as the practice has shown - even the methods of its implementation.

But it is equally important to understand that you cannot anticipate everything. BetterMe team and I learn and act accordingly.

Key Takeaways

  • Define your mission and move forward. Stress inhibits you from seeing situations with clarity. And as a CEO/top manager in crisis, manifesting energy and solutions is a top priority.
  • Bring stability and control back to the team. Meet fear in its face, create and communicate all worst scenarios to prevent total system failure.
  • Keep your energy level high by supporting healthy nutrition, consistent daily workouts, and mindfulness practices like deep breathing and guided meditation.
