I'll start off by saying, I'm not a fan of referring to them as 'trainings.' The term 'training' implies that I'm going to teach you how to do something, and you have to do it exactly as I showed you, otherwise, it won't work. It's like teaching someone how to send a text message. If you don't click the messaging app, draft or open an existing text, type your message, and hit send, then it won't work. However, we are humans, not phones. Therefore, 'workshop' is more fitting for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Workshops include facilitated discussions and peer-to-peer learning, where participants can exchange best practices and apply insights in ways that suit their specific contexts. This flexible approach allows individuals to adapt or even disregard approaches that don’t align with their needs, fostering a truly inclusive environment.

With that said, yes, investing in DEI (not just diversity) workshops and programs can indeed increase creativity and innovation. Learning how to develop and maintain trust and psychological safety through workshops creates environments where people feel comfortable speaking up, sharing ideas, and even navigating dissent in a respectful way. And THAT, in turn, leads to more groundbreaking solutions and advancements.

Here's a practical example: imagine you have a team member who's bursting with ideas and solutions, but she's an introvert. The few times she's tried to speak up, the rest of her team talks over her or dismisses her ideas simply because her voice isn't the loudest. A DEI workshop on inclusive team dynamics could educate team members on how to not only embrace but also solicit input and ideas from more introverted colleagues, ultimately creating a more respectful and psychologically safe working environment for everyone.
