The Certification Tip That Made the Difference in My Tech Journey

One thing I was very conscious of when I pivoted into tech was not rushing straight into certification exams.

At the time, I saw many of my peers studying for certifications, passing their exams, and earning credentials. I was genuinely happy for them because everyone has their own path into tech.

But for me, it was never about collecting certifications as quickly as possible.

What mattered most was understanding what I was learning and being able to apply it in a real working environment.

I've always believed there's a difference between knowing something well enough to pass an exam and understanding it well enough to use it. We can memorise information, revise for weeks, and earn a certification, but what happens when you're asked to apply that knowledge to solve a real problem?

That question stayed with me throughout my early years in tech.

Because of that, I didn't take my first AWS certification immediately. In fact, I waited until I had spent several years working in the industry.

By that point, I felt ready.

I had gained practical experience, developed a deeper understanding of the technologies I was working with, and had a much clearer picture of how everything connected. Taking the certification felt like a natural next step rather than something I was doing simply to add another credential to my CV.

It also aligned with my personal development goals at the time.

Now, that doesn't mean everyone should follow the same approach.

For some people, certifications can help open doors into their first tech role. Some employers specifically ask for them, and in those situations they can be incredibly valuable.

This is simply what worked for me.

I've always preferred practical, hands-on learning. I learn best by doing, testing, making mistakes, and building my understanding over time. That's what gave me confidence in my abilities, not just confidence in passing an exam.

Certifications absolutely have their place. When approached correctly, they can strengthen your knowledge, validate your skills, and help structure your learning. But it's important to be intentional about how you prepare for them.

Not all certifications are designed in the same way.

Some focus on concepts and principles, while others require detailed knowledge of specific tools, services, or real-world scenarios. Understanding what a certification is actually designed to assess can make a huge difference in how you prepare.
For me, the goal was never to pass an exam as quickly as possible.

The goal was to become someone who could confidently apply what I had learned. The certification was simply confirmation of that journey, not the starting point.

When you're transitioning into tech, it's easy to compare your timeline to everyone else's. What I've learned is that confidence comes from competence, and competence is built through understanding and practice, not speed.

You’re Not Starting Over: How Non-Tech Professionals Can Transition Into Tech

From my perspective, when it comes to non-tech professionals entering tech, I believe you can move into almost any tech role you set your mind to.
You have the capacity and the capability to make the transition, as long as you’re prepared to put in the work it takes.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see when people are considering a career change into tech is the belief that they are going to have to start all over again.
I don't believe that’s the case.

You’re not starting over.
You’re moving into a new environment.
And moving into this new environment means learning new tools, gaining new knowledge, understanding the concepts behind those tools, and learning how they work together to achieve an end goal.
But there is something else you bring with you that is just as important.

Your transferable skills.
These are skills you have already developed and mastered over years of working in a professional environment.
Communication.

Problem-solving.

Working with people.

Managing projects.

Understanding customers.

Making decisions.

Working under pressure.

Being able to take a problem and work out how to solve it.

These skills don't suddenly disappear because you have moved into technology.

You take them with you.

That’s why I believe a career change into tech doesn't mean starting from zero.

It means building on what you already know and adding the technical knowledge you need for your new career.

I know this because I did it myself
I switched into tech from a non-tech background.
For more than 25 years, I worked in fashion as a designer, working with some of the biggest high street brands in the UK and Europe.

Today, I work as a DevOps Engineer.

People often find my career pivot fascinating, and I’m always humbled by that.
But what I think fascinates people most is that I didn't choose one of the roles they might traditionally associate with someone moving into tech.

I didn't become a software engineer.

I didn't move into IT support.

I moved into DevOps and cloud, an area where women are still significantly underrepresented.

And that is one of the reasons I feel so strongly about this.

We shouldn't limit ourselves to the roles we think are “suitable” for us.
If you want to move into technology, there are many different paths you can take.

Tech careers for non-tech professionals
There isn't one single route into tech.
Depending on your existing experience, interests and strengths, you could consider roles such as:
* Data Analyst
* Digital Marketing
* Project Manager
* UX/UI Designer
* Technical Writer
* IT Support
* QA Tester
* Sales Engineer
* Cybersecurity Compliance
* Business Analyst
* Cloud/DevOps Engineer

And these are only some of the possibilities.
Your previous career can actually help you decide which direction to take.

A project manager moving into technology already understands how to manage people, deadlines, risks and expectations.
Someone from marketing can bring their understanding of customers and communication into digital marketing, product or technology.

Someone from finance can bring analytical and problem-solving skills into data, business analysis or fintech.
Someone from education can move into EdTech, technical training or learning technology.
Your previous career isn't necessarily something you need to leave behind.

It can become part of what makes you valuable in tech.

But where are women in tech?
This is where I think the conversation gets interesting.
Women are working in technology, but we're still significantly underrepresented, particularly in some of the more technical areas.
And the numbers tell the story.

The UK picture
According to the BCS Gender Diversity in the Tech Sector Report 2025, there were 441,000 women working as IT specialists
in the UK in 2024.

That sounds like a big number.

But women represented just 22% of IT specialists, compared with 49% of the overall UK workforce.
If women were represented in IT at the same level as they are across the wider workforce, there would be approximately

530,000 more women working in IT in the UK.
Think about that for a moment.
530,000 women.

That's a huge amount of talent that isn't currently represented in IT at the level we would expect based on the wider workforce.

And the gap becomes even more interesting when you look at individual roles.
BCS data has shown that women accounted for only around 6% of IT engineers, while women represented around 30% of IT project and programme managers and 30% of web designers and developers.
So when we talk about women in tech, we can't treat technology as one single career.

There are significant differences depending on the role.

The US picture
The US tells a similar story.

Women make up around 30% of the US tech-industry workforce, despite representing 47% of total US employment, according to CBRE's Scoring Tech Talent 2025 research.
Again, the gap becomes more noticeable when we look at specific roles.

Women represented 29.2% of Computer Support, Database & Systems occupations, but only 17.6% of Software Developers, Programmers & Engineers in the US.
The numbers are different across countries and datasets, but the overall picture is clear.

Women are not absent from technology.
But we are still significantly underrepresented in some of the areas that are shaping the future of technology.

The areas where we need more women

💻 Software Engineering

These are areas where I would love to see more women considering a career.

Not because every woman should become an engineer.

And not because these careers are somehow better than other careers in technology.

But because women should have the opportunity to see themselves in every part of the technology industry.
I know this personally.

I moved from a career in fashion design into DevOps and cloud.

I didn't have a traditional technology background.

I wasn't a software engineer.

I didn't grow up coding.

I had spent more than 25 years building a career in an entirely different industry.

But I had something that I could bring with me.

Experience.
* I knew how to solve problems.
* I knew how to work with people.
* I knew how to manage deadlines.
* I knew how to deal with pressure.
* I knew how to make decisions.
* I knew how to take an idea and turn it into something tangible.
* What I needed to learn was the technology.
* And that is the difference.

I wasn't starting again.
I was learning a new environment.

You still have to learn the technical skills
This is important because I don't want to give the impression that transferable skills alone will get you into technology.

They won't.

You still have to learn.

You still have to put in the work.

And you need to understand the technology behind the role you want to move into.

This is where I think the foundation of your learning becomes really important.

If you decide to take an online course, don't just choose a course because it gives you a certificate.

You need to understand:
* What the tools are
* What problems they solve
* Why you would use one tool over another
* How to use the tools correctly
* How the different tools work together
* How to troubleshoot when something goes wrong
* How to apply what you've learned to real-world problems

For me, learning technology was never just about learning a list of tools.
It was about understanding why those tools exist, what problems they solve and how they fit together.
That understanding gives you confidence.
And confidence comes from knowing that when something doesn't work, you can investigate it, understand what is happening and work towards a solution.

Your previous career still matters
This is probably the biggest message I want non-tech professionals to take away.

Your previous career is not wasted.
The years you spent building your skills, dealing with difficult situations, managing people, solving problems, working with customers, meeting deadlines and making decisions still have value.
You're simply applying those skills in a new environment.
I didn't throw away my 25+ years of experience when I moved into technology.
I brought that experience with me.
Then I added the technical knowledge I needed.
That's the career transition.

“Not starting again”

Building again.
And I believe more women should give themselves permission to do exactly that.

You don't have to fit the traditional image of what a “tech person” looks like.

You don't have to have grown up coding.

You don't necessarily need a computer science degree.

And you don't have to leave your previous career behind.

You can take your experience with you.

You can learn the technical skills.

You can build your confidence.

And you can create a new career without losing the value of the career you already had.

You are not starting over

You are taking everything you've learned and moving it into a new environment.

And perhaps one day, someone else will look at your career change and think:

“If she did it, maybe I can do it too.”
