New Relic is looking for an experienced, highly technical leader to manage one of our staff engineering groups and build part of our next-generation architecture. Our staff engineers work across the different engineering groups on some of our hardest problems while also raising the bar for clean testable code, reliability, scalability, performance, and cost efficiency. Your job is to manage and lead these engineers while also driving technical solutions yourself.

DevOps, containerization, cloud-native computing, AI monitoring, and new open-source standards like Open Telemetry are driving explosive growth in telemetry data. New Relic is a leader in this space that has been growing rapidly to meet this demand and to provide our customers with a world-class solution for surfacing deep, correlated, and real-time insights across any telemetry source at enterprise volume, from anywhere.
What you'll do
  • Staff engineers play a critical role across the organization to build our next generation architecture, uplevel our tooling, and assist teams when they are tackling particularly important or ambitious problems. They act as the glue across our organization. Your job will be to:
  • Understand the company’s priorities and ensure staff engineers are working on the right problems
  • Help staff engineers engage, embed, and go deep with teams on high impact projects, leaving the team and code in a healthier state
  • Coach and mentor both the engineers under you and the managers working with your engineers.
  • Contribute to cross-team initiatives and promote standards and information sharing between teams.
What your playground will look like:
  • 100s of services written mainly in Java or React with one of the largest Kafka backbones in the world.
  • A multi-cloud (Kubernetes) environment spanning thousands of nodes and accepting 10s of billions of HTTP requests a day.
  • Our massively scalable, purpose-built telemetry database, NRDB.
This role requires
If you are considering this role you have strong technical chops and experience leading highly skilled engineers.
  • 3+ years of experience managing engineers or engineering teams
  • 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering
  • Previous experience as a Principal Software Engineer or above.
  • Ability to partner across the organization to achieve shared goals
  • Ability to cultivate an inclusive and diverse environment that enables people to do their best work
  • History of getting things done in a distributed, large-scale, and fast-growing environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to seek consensus, provide technical leadership, lead by example, exhibiting patience and determination.
  • Ability to rapidly come up to speed on new teams and services to make decisive organizational and technical impact.
Bonus points if you have
  • The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more of the below areas and is
  • energized by building expertise in some of the others.
  • Experience with Java, Go, or React
  • Experience with observability tools and platforms (such as ours)
  • Exposure to Kubernetes and containerization
  • Exposure to cloud architectures (AWS, Azure, GCP)
