Bold Conversations and Bright Futures: Women in Tech Melbourne at EY

On May 1st, the Melbourne skyline set the stage for an evening that pulsed with energy, inspiration, and critical conversation. Hosted by EY, the Women in Tech Melbourne event brought together tech professionals, thought leaders, and gender equity advocates for a powerful live debate on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping a more equitable future.

Sparks Fly in the AI & Gender Equity Debate

The heart of the evening was a dynamic live debate—two teams of three professionals passionately argued for and against AI’s potential to drive gender equity in technology. The debate was far from hypothetical; each team grounded their perspectives in real-world data, lived experiences, and evolving trends in the AI landscape.

With a panel of expert judges from AI and tech backgrounds closely observing, the debaters tackled some of the toughest questions: Can AI truly eliminate bias—or does it risk replicating the very inequalities we seek to dismantle? Can algorithmic fairness be achieved in a world still shaped by systemic inequities?

    Keynote from a Visionary Leader

As the judges deliberated, Katherine Boiciuc, EY Oceania - Regional Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, delivered a captivating keynote. Drawing from cutting-edge research and her extensive experience, Katherine highlighted both the promise and pitfalls of AI in the context of gender equity.

She emphasized the critical need for ethical AI development, transparency in data practices, and inclusive innovation.

The evening ended on a high note with networking over drinks and canapés, offering space for reflection and connection. Attendees—from junior developers to seasoned executives—discussed how they could take the conversation forward in their teams, projects, and leadership circles.

The event’s deeper goal was not just to inform, but to mobilize a community of changemakers. In this, it succeeded.

This event comes at a critical moment. As AI becomes embedded in everything from recruitment to performance reviews, it holds enormous power to either perpetuate or dismantle systemic inequalities. Women in Tech Melbourne was a reminder that the outcomes of AI are not preordained—they are shaped by who builds it, how it's built, and what values guide that work.

By fostering honest debate and empowering professionals with knowledge and connections, the event helped lay the groundwork for a more thoughtful, inclusive approach to technology.
