  3. Fortran

Fortran

Fortran, an acronym for Formula Translation, is a high-level, general-purpose programming language that is particularly suitable for numeric computation and scientific computing. It was initially developed in the 1950s by IBM for scientific and engineering calculations. Today, it's utilized in areas where precise calculations and rigorous mathematical modeling are required, like climate modeling, computational chemistry, and numerical weather prediction, to name a few.

Candidates skilled in Fortran are expected to be proficient in developing, testing, and debugging complex program codes written in this language. They should also have a comprehensive understanding about creating algorithms, manipulating data arrays, managing output and computational procedures. Knowledge in modern versions of the language such as Fortran 90, Fortran 95, or Fortran 2003 can be a plus, as these versions incorporate object-oriented programming concepts, making the language more adaptable and versatile.

Related skills that provide an excellent foundation for mastering Fortran include a strong background in computer programming principles, proficiency in mathematics, and knowledge of other high-level programming languages like C, C++ or Python, as this can facilitate the understanding of various coding paradigms. You might also benefit from having good problem-solving abilities and strong analytical skills as the nature of tasks which involve Fortran often demand these qualities.

Moreover, Fortran programming involves working with large systems and requires excellent organizational and time management skills. Familiarity with software documentation and version control tools will also be beneficial, as these are essential components in the software development life cycle.

Lastly, as with any job in the tech industry, strong written and verbal communication skills are important for conveying complex technical information clearly to non-technical team members and stakeholders.

In summary, Fortran is a powerful and widely-used language for numerical computing. Acquiring skills in Fortran could potentially open doors to numerous opportunities in scientific and engineering sectors.
