Embracing Change: Leadership in a Volatile Automotive Industry
The automotive industry is undergoing rapid transformation, influenced by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity—often referred to as VUCA. In this blog, we will explore what success means in today's business landscape and identify the principles of effective leadership that can help navigate these turbulent times.
Understanding Success in Today's World
Success is not merely about achieving professional milestones; it encompasses a holistic approach to life. To me, success is defined by the ability to:
- Stand for strong values and beliefs
- Stay human and make a positive impact
- Demonstrate consistency, intent, and integrity
This perspective encourages us to integrate our personal and professional lives, leading to a more fulfilling experience.
The Business Context: The Exponential VUCA Challenge
In a world characterized by increasing volatility, recognizing the need for emotional intelligent leadership is not optional—it's essential. As one insightful quote highlights:
"In a world defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, emotional intelligent leadership isn't a luxury. It's a necessity."
Seven Leadership Principles for Navigating Change
Leadership in today’s volatile environment requires a set of principles that can be applied in parallel to create credibility, resilience, and impact:
- Lead from Purpose, Not Pressure: Align your decisions with your values, making a meaningful impact rather than simply serving individual interests.
- Choose Courage Over Comfort: Differentiate between principled courage and performative boldness. Challenge decisions early and speak truth to power.
- Master Emotional Intelligence: Build psychological safety within teams to foster collaboration and innovation.
- Build Strategic Networks and Seek Sponsors: Cultivate relationships with mentors who both advise and advocate for you.
- Lead with Agility: Adapt to changing contexts by listening actively and accepting diverse opinions.
- Make Resilience a Daily Practice: Cultivate a growth mindset and protect your physical and mental energy.
- Redefine the Leadership Narrative: Embrace inclusive, human-centric approaches to leadership, moving away from traditional top-down models.
Practicing Leadership Principles
Implementing these principles can look like this in practice:
- Admit uncertainties openly, fostering an environment of trust.
- Make difficult decisions when needed, recognizing that asking for help does not show weakness.
- Encourage collaboration within teams to maximize strengths and abilities.
- Celebrate collective achievements as a team, not just individual successes.
The Role of Women in Transformational Leadership
Women naturally excel in transformational leadership, creating environments where employees feel valued, heard, and motivated. This strength can be harnessed not just in professional settings, but also in our communities and homes.
Building a Supportive Business Environment
To foster an inclusive culture that allows women to thrive, organizations should:
- Ensure equitable promotion rates across all levels.
- Train managers to recognize and address gender bias in evaluations.
- Normalize flexible work arrangements without career penalties.
- Celebrate women's achievements with the same visibility as their male counterparts.
Conclusion: Embracing Change
As we navigate these challenging times, it's essential to view change as an opportunity rather than a threat. By adopting these leadership principles and fostering an inclusive environment, we can drive meaningful change in our organizations and communities.
Remember, being part of the journey to change is not just about adapting but actively driving it. Thank you for joining this exploration of effective leadership in the automotive industry!
Video Transcription
And we can go to presentation mode.My presentation will be a sum of elements combining my own experience, personal reflection, as well as leadership stories trying to result in some meaningful, you know, guidance on what I'm using and what can other also reflect to if it's suitable to address and use or not. Yeah? And as you spoke about automotive industry and we know how turbulent is these days, I was trying to reflect before reviewing the slides for this session, actually, what success means these days. And this is my first point I will address here. What success really is for me, then I will con I will try to address the business context and the the challenges we have, leadership principles, what I'm using to guide personally and what I consistently implemented during the year.
Approach from general to particular as when it comes to, you know, what companies should ideally do and what we do in my company. Now, I run fast, and I skipped this one. But just in case, you would like to connect, you can, scan the QR code and, happy to learn with and together, from and together with you. Now what I was saying, what success really is for me. So I think it's the ability to stand for strong values and beliefs, to stay human, to make an impact, not only as a professional, but also in your personal life and in society to demonstrate consistency intent in integrity. And I was trying to understand if it makes sense to differentiate personally or professionally, and I think not because in the end, this is the campus which is guiding us, in general through the life.
So now business context. This is not a new thing, and, volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity is no longer a new concept. What I want to say is that we need to understand that we have actually exponential VUCA. And I really liked one of the quotes I found while exploring a lot of the materials coming in this regards. And I also edit it here. It's in a world defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, emotional intelligent leadership isn't a luxury. It's a necessity. So I really resonate with this one. And you will see this through the principle we will run through, there is always a flavor of emotional intelligence which needs to be there in order to to address the complexity in the current context. Now the seven lead leadership principle I would like to mention here, and, also to to clarify, this is not about, sequential steps, but rather things to be applied in parallel because they build credibility, resilience, and impact.
Yeah? And this actually help us to transform the volatility from a threat to an opportunity for us and for the team we are and for the company we are part of and for the society we are part of. Lead from purpose, not from pressure. Choose courage over comfort Comfort, master emotional intelligence. Build strategic networks and six consoles. You know, some of us are also doing such with such events as this one. Lead with agility. Adapt early. Make resilience a daily practice redefines the leadership narrative. Lead from the purpose, not from pressure. So, as I mentioned in the beginning, it's very important for us to have a compass based on our values and beliefs. Yeah? And this, help us to take decision when the data is incom complete, to build trust when outcomes are uncertain, and to fuel resilience when resistance is, is fierce.
So how this can look for us in the practice and today to day, real life is like, okay. Not asking ourselves, is this role impressing, but rather is it something aligned with with my values, with what I do want to achieve? Take decisions for making an impact and not for serving politics or individuals. Show up before having all the answers. I mean, waiting for the perfect context and have full clarity will just generate stagnation and not help. Admit uncertainty openly, and, vulnerability accelerates trust. So this, acceptance that we are where we are, and it's it's creating relevant, you know, connection. Second principle, choose courage over comfort. So and here, I think it is relevant to differentiate in the in between principled courage and performative boldness because acting on clear values and evidence when everything is unpopular and uncomfortable is clearly more important than just creating a mask and appearing decisive to manage perception.
So it's about who we are. Yeah? What this looks in practice. Yeah? Challenge decisions early. Speak truth to power. Make hard calls on people. Not be afraid to do that. Yeah? Learn fast and ask for help when you need it. It's so important to recognize that you need help. It's it's not a weakness. Actually, it's a it's a proof of, you know, strength. Third principle, master emotional intelligence. I mean, we started with it. I will not insist. This is very the very core of everything. Yeah? And I really appreciate Daniel Goleman. I I hope that everyone or at least if you did not have the chance to to to read, something about, his materials and his work, I strongly encourage. There is a book, about emotional intelligence and why emotional intelligence can matter more than intelligence itself. Yeah? And I think there are many elements described there in very details.
Here, I will just point the few. So volatility creates fears. Leaders with high IQ can, IQ can keep teams focused and grounded. Uncertainty brings anxiety. Empathetics leader build psychological safety that enables innovation. This is actually one of the core things which in which company in each company, we it's very important for us to understand that that type of psychological safety environment is important for everything, for the way people work, for the way our team delivers, succeed. So, yeah, it's it's a core. Complexity requires collaboration. AQ enables us a trust that makes cross functional teams work. Nothing more to comment. Ambiguity demands adaptability. Self awareness leaders pivot without losing their team. So always being able to to to connect to people, to connect to yourself, to learn about the social skills, and be able to act like a team player, build a a united and a strong team around you, I I think it's it's very important.
How women succeed in this direction, I think it's also a quote I extracted here from the Talent Management Institute. Woman saying that woman naturally excel in transformational leadership, creating workspaces where employees feels valued, heard, and motivated. Well, yes, we have majority of us, and I think that not only women, but maybe I would say it's a a strength we have, more often, seen at women than in men. And this is naturally there, so we need to be conscious about that and actually benefit out of that and use that also at work and not only in the society, at home, in in our family. Fourth principle, build strategic network and seek sponsors. So, yeah, you can be the best person unless somebody is able to really, how to say, keep your back or support you to grow, seeing you, the positive, and the potential as well, it's not going to work.
So it's important that people have both mentors who advise and sponsors who advocate. And I added here some of the elements to consider on how to build a strategic network and just to list few of them. Peer relationship to be cultivated. Six sponsors who will advocate publicly for you your advancement and not just advise privately. I mean, people who really believe in you, see you, and see potential, not who you are now, maybe what you you can have as a potential to be in the next step. Yeah? Build cross functional visibility. Take on projects that expose you to the senior leader. So, also, something as an advice, not to look always for opportunity which where you feel yourself 100% able to deliver.
But, you know, having some percentage of coverage and learning how to deliver the rest, it's very good starting point and motivates and actually gives you the opportunity to grow. Invest in reciprocal relationships, sponsor other women to build collective momentum. Have a mentor, have a sponsor, but also understanding the value when you have the chance, act like a mentor and a sponsor. I'm also doing it, personally at work. Also in, other communities, I think it's relevant, and it's always bidirectional learning from both sides, mentor, mentee, and sponsor sponsor people. Fifth principle, lead with agility, adapt early. Well, leadership agility defined as the ability to read changing context and adapt strategy is the main cap of capability in the volatile era. And I added here four dimensions, and each of them what it means for for for us and how to build.
And each of them having the very core importance and relevance for for us to grow in agility. And, again, this is also something where you have some natural things. They are able to give you the baseline, but in the end, you need to be conscious that this is also needs to be cultivated and and grown. Yeah. So how to build it? Context agility, you know, scenario playing, access diverse sources of information. Updated and connected. Be be curious to to understand everything around you, and you are able in this way also to have build connections and understand fast how to how to react. Stakeholders' agility. Adapt to different, audiences, this means. Yeah. So active listening, and this is so important because, you know, it's not always to listen just to react, but listen to really understand, and that gives a lot. Yeah?
Accept different opinion opinions and communication. Creative agility. Well, this means to generate new solutions. And I think we sometimes, see many people, advocating to, you know, solutions which were always there or always implemented. I think that is actually a bit of a den danger, how to say, a pitfall. Having people see us clearly mentioning, you know, you we always did it like that. Well, this is not exactly a driver for for grow and for curiosity. Identifying new solutions, stay curious, and continuously learning how to do it faster, better. You have now and we have now new tools. We have AI. Come on. I mean, it's already already a lot of things can be done faster and better than we used to do. Self agility, involve your leadership style.
Mean, I coaching, mentoring, I mentioned in the other context as well, feedback session, reflection. Owner a perspective, all these are are very important. Make resilience a daily practice. So, well, I I think resilience these days is no longer optional. It is a it is a must. Yeah? Neuroscience research shows that mindfulness practices enhance emotional regulation, reduce cortisol response to stress, and improve decision quality under pressure. So I think I need to say I learned this by my own experience is that unless you practice all kind of, you know, elements and you don't learn how to to to develop further your resilience, you you can have really hard times these days. So what this means and how to cultivate it? Cultivate a growth mindset mindset. I mean, instead of, wondering why this happens to me, okay, it's better to to to try to understand, okay, what can I learn from this?
Everything as a learning, every situation, comes with, something new. This is a better way to position yourself even against the very challenging context we have. Protect physical and mental energy as a strategic resource. So, again, taking from an empty cup is not going to help. So you need to find elements and ways to always add something there so that your energy is refueled. Because once you become dry, it's very hard to recover. So burnout is really not a badge of honor. Support. Act yourself as the CEO of your life and and build a personal brand of advisers, coaches, peers, mentors, friends. Yeah? People who in whom you trust, and they can provide perspective and accountability. That is very important to to to cultivate resilience. Boundaries. I mentioned about the the cup and how we need to fully fulfill it.
I think it's important to have clear boundaries because that needs to be there to protect your your energy. So and this should not be treated as a selfish attitude, how we always maybe have the in initial stage when we try to define this boundary to consider ourself. It's just normal to do that. Yeah? Reflection practice. I think regular reflection through close friend, journaling, coaching, peer, but as well as personal retrospective. Build self awareness. It's so important to have these moments of, you know, really vulnerability, I would say, with yourself and with people in who you trust so that you you look in an objective way on on on things and learn from how to do it better next time and how to position ourselves better next time and how to react better next time.
Redefines the leadership narrative. So I think for many years, society encouraged male blueprint of leadership, and this is not necessarily the best approach or, let's put it this way, the approach which will continue to help us these days. Yeah. So this is why I strongly believe that being collaborative against hierarchical, being adapt adaptive against being rigid, purpose driven be instead of profit only, inclusive instead of exclusive, human centric instead of pure analytical will make the difference. Yeah. This is becoming strategically important and, you know, is also another code here. I strongly agree with that the world is striving for new ideas and great leaders will champion this new this idea. So let's let's be cautious about all this.
Now okay. We spoke about what we can do as an individual, but then acting as a stand alone in a society does not help. So we need to to understand how the companies ideally should consider all these elements and make sure create an environment in which people and women are able to, you know, perform at their best. So ensure they got promotion rates at the first management level. I think this is so, so important. Train managers to recognize the correct gender bias performance evaluations. Track and disclose gender representation at every, at every level. Sponsor don't just mentor. Yeah. I think this is so important. We benefit out of it. We should give from our side as well. Normalized flexible arrangement without career penalty and not not just for parents or for one, for all employees. Recognize and celebrate woman achievements with the same visibility given to male leaders, so be equally distant. I mean, this is so, so, so important.
Now from the general to particular, and I will mention here few of the elements which guide us through the inside DXC as our culture. And you see as a core as core value we have to deliver, do the right thing, care, collaborate, community. All these encourage the seven principle as stand alone as people as leaders being part of the community of the team as well as, as well as, company itself, recognizing the importance of, these, core values as the rules of the road. Then we have the strategic drivers because we are, in the end, wired to win, customer first experience, exponential excellence, all these encouraging, behaviors like focus forward together. Yes. Together. It's it's so important is together. Own the outcome. So celebrate every success. I think all these are also elements we we see from various angle as a as a company, as a person, as a, you know, leaders.
And it's important to always connect the dots because in the end, we are part of, you know, let's say, you know, mission in this world, not as a stand alone individuals. So I would try to close with my personal view here, and I think it's, in general, even in this crazy world, even in this, you know, everything changing every day, normality having different boundaries every day. So we should not be afraid of change, but rather be part of it and drive it. I think this is, the future. So thank you for being with me today.
