When I was a girl in a village in Jammu, nobody came to mentor me. No female engineer knocked on my door and said — this path is possible for you. I had to find my way in the dark, with nothing but my parents' belief and my own stubborn refusal to accept the life that was planned for me.
That absence shaped everything I believe about mentorship.
When I got to university I did not wait for someone to guide me. I started Vikalp — an NGO at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University dedicated to educating girls and helping them understand their rights, their choices, and their happiness. Girls who looked like me. Girls from villages like mine. Girls who had never been asked what they wanted.
I was not a female executive when I started Vikalp. I was a student who remembered exactly what it felt like to be invisible. And I decided that as long as I had a voice, no girl around me would feel that way.
That is what mentorship really is. It is not a formal program or a scheduled meeting. It is one person turning around and reaching back for the person behind them.
When I moved to Canada in August 2024 I arrived with two engineering degrees, Nokia experience, DRDO experience, and an NGO behind me. I applied to 1500 jobs. Every single one said no. The silence of those rejections was the loneliest I have ever felt professionally.
What kept me going was community. WomenTech Network. Toastmasters. Online study groups. People I had never met who showed up in comment sections and LinkedIn messages and said — keep going, we see you.
That is a mentor too. Sometimes mentorship looks like a formal relationship with a senior leader. Sometimes it looks like a stranger on the internet who takes thirty seconds to say you are not alone.
Today I run a financial literacy Instagram channel called Smart Money because I believe every woman deserves to understand money, independence, and her own power. That is mentorship too — just at scale.
To every female executive reading this: you do not need a title to be a mentor. You just need a memory. Remember what it felt like before someone believed in you — and then go be that person for someone else.
