About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Hardware Engineer to join our Electrical and Embedded Software engineering team based in Palo Alto.  The ideal candidate has a passion for making things move, demonstrated knowledge of industry best practices bringing complex electronics to market, and the ability to deliver results as part of a dynamic, cross-functional team.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work with aeronautical and mechanical engineers to determine the propulsion system requirements for Wing’s unmanned aircraft systems
  • Design and/or select electromechanical components (motors, actuators, servos) according to system requirements
  • Design control electronics and generate electrical schematics
  • Define and execute test plans for motor control systems
  • Design for volume manufacturing and support factory engineers from prototyping to product launch. International travel for build support up to 15%
  • Drive resolution of cross-functional issues including those related to architecture (performance, power consumption, thermal behavior), production (quality, failure analysis, manufacturing, cost) and development (schematic design, PCB layout and overall system integration)
  • Perform data analysis and generate engineering documentation (design drawing, documents, test plans, procedures and reports)
  • Collaborate across diverse teams to meet safety, reliability and certification requirements

What You’ll Need:

  • BA/BS degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering/Embedded/Computer Hardware Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum 5 years of design experience in an electronics production environment, including experience with packaging, integration, cost reduction, sourcing and transitioning a product to the manufacturing team
  • Experience with brushless DC motors in aviation applications
  • Experience with design and testing of electronic speed controllers (ESCs)
  • Embedded programming experience on baremetal/light RTOS systems
  • Strong technical communication/presentation skills and attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of size, weight, power, processing resources and cost constraints needed by real-time, embedded avionics platforms

Bonus:

  • Background in custom BLDC motor design and/or propeller design
  • Control theory education and experience
  • Experience in software design for BLDC motor control applications
  • Passion or interest in aviation
