Tech for Good: A Discussion with Sarah York, Chief Marketing and Digital Officer of Spa

In this blog post, we'll take a deep dive into the concept of "tech for good", with insights derived from a presentation by Sarah York - a remarkable figure in Texas who has a shared interest with notable personalities like Matthew McConaughey and Mark Cuban in the field of purposeful innovation.

What is Tech for Good?

Highlighting the common desire for innovative ideas that serve long-term sustainable needs and positively affect individuals, communities, and systems, Sarah explained that tech for good focuses on creating technology that tackles social, economic, or environmental challenges. This concept was first popularized by Paul Miller in the UK and fundamentally revolves around community involvement and user-led technology development, which results in ethical and innovative solutions. Tech for good is a growing trend seen across multiple sectors, with plenty of opportunities for growth.

Key players in the tech for good space include:

  • Khan Academy - a non-profit organization providing world-class digital education to all children
  • Sama (previously SamaSource) - uses technology to uplift low-income groups by securing positions in the tech sector, paying a sustainable living wage

Tech for Social Good

Drawing from a quote by Brian Chesky, Airbnb's founder and CEO, Sarah emphasized that companies need to consider not just their shareholders, but also their social responsibility towards the next generation. Tech for social good is all about centering people in business strategy and focusing on meaningful social impact.

The outcomes from tech for social good, which can range from environmental impact to health and education, are more crucial than the mechanisms used to achieve them.

Challenges in the Tech for Good Space

While there are many opportunities in the tech for good space, it's essential to acknowledge the challenges it faces. Notably, diversity and inclusion - especially in terms of gender and ethnicity - need significant improvement. According to Sarah, we need people from all walks of life to drive the social good movement forward.

Sarah also highlighted some significant market trends related to tech for good. One of these trends is the increasing influence of socially conscious Gen Z and Millennial consumers. These consumers are driving businesses towards purposeful innovation.

Tech Startups and the Race towards Purposeful Innovation

With 1.35 million tech start-ups worldwide, the drive for reaching new customers and creating societal benefits for all stakeholders is becoming more apparent. Business giants like Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, believe that steering businesses towards 'good' is good business sense.

From Sarah's viewpoint, socially conscious companies can certainly retain user interest and result in profits. Tech for good should not merely serve as a reactive tool; instead, it should be developed proactively with a user-centric, test-driven approach. Consumers are no longer passive users; they shape the technology that we create.

Case Study: Spave

Sarah shared her experiences with Spave, a platform designed to help users achieve financial wholeness by balancing spending, saving, and giving. Winner of the best of show at Innovate Spring 2020, Spave brings together personal financial management aspects into a single app, empowering consumers to track and analyze their spending, save for their future, pay down debt, and reach philanthropic goals.

Sarah concluded her presentation by emphasizing that tech for good is more about solving problems and focusing on meaningful outcomes than simply chasing profits. As put by Aaron Hurst, CEO of Imperative and author of The Purpose Economy, companies that don't start focusing on purposeful innovation risk being left in the dust.

OK, so I, I guess we'll get started. Um My name is Sarah York, I'm Chief Marketing and Digital Officer for Spa. And I put together this presentation about tech for good. So let's dive right in.So what do Matthew mcconaughey, Mark Cuban and I all have in common besides that, we are living in Texas. Well, um purposeful innovation is, is what we have in common. Um Matthew mcconaughey recently shared his investment strategy and he, he said that he was interested in sustainable innovation, um meaning innovative ideas that can fulfill long term needs. So as he's looking for companies that have purpose, companies to uplift empower, construct redefine and bring new or renewed health to individuals, communities and systems and Mr Mark Cuban uh recently, if you were paying attention to the news uh just released and, and uh cost plus drugs, um He was solving for a broad community.

Um He states on the company website, everyone should have safe, affordable med medicines with transparent prices and he and his team are building for good. So that brings us to tech for good. So tech for good was first popularized by Paul Miller in the UK. Um He was uh an innovator himself and later went on to start um Beth Mill green ventures at the root of all of his work. Um tech for good is surrounding a community of people. And it's about making tech that addresses social, economic and environmental challenges and about building a tech in a collaborative user led way with an end result. That's ethically right on. So, basically, we're trying to make things that are useful and solve a problem. All right.

So here's a quote from uh Brian, from the founder and CEO of Airbnb. Um It's clear that our responsibility isn't just to our employees, our shareholders or even our community. It's also to the next generation, companies have a responsibility to improve society and the problems airbnb can have a role in solving are so vast that we need to operate on a longer time horizon. So tech for social good is emerging. It, it's not a sector, it's a mobilizing framework for articulating our, our values, our behaviors or attitudes and things that describe a focus on social impact. So we're putting people at the heart of the business of the technology, of what we're trying to do. The outcomes of tech for social good are more important than the mechanisms. So those outcomes include impact on the environment, um communities, health, education, mobility transport that you name it. Um organizations that are doing things in the tech for good space are establishing a clear identity and showing tons of growth. So tech for social good is cutting across multiple sectors. It's not just one sector within technology. So here's a couple of exemplary do-gooders.

So I don't know how many of you have Children. Um I do, I have a daughter, a younger daughter and uh Khan Academy is one of her favorite learning tools. Um Khan Academy, it is a nonprofit and it creates world class education that they deliver digitally. They have partnerships through NASA MIT, but they're trying to give Children a better way to learn and give all Children um access to education and fun tools for education. Um Sama uh used to be called Sam. A source is a social venture. I'll read this one intent on moving low income and impoverished groups to middle income through securing work in the tech sector that pays a sustainable living wage. So this company started off by trying to create work for individuals that were highly skilled. Um I believe initially in Africa and took their skilled workers and helped build some of the positions that were necessary um in the United States that not everybody would necessarily want to take initially and created a mutually beneficial um work arrangement. So the individuals in the areas of Africa that were coming in and, and working were getting much better wages, they were able to uplift their uh societies and communities. And it was a win for the companies utilizing Sama and their um workforce. So the purpose and impact of tech for good is that you use social uh social, good uses digital technology to tackle some of the world's toughest challenges and some are for profit and some are nonprofit. I won't get into the details of that one.

But profit and nonprofit, both sides can make huge waves um to better the world. So one of the key challenges uh for tech for good is diversity and inclusion. Um It's particularly in the gender and ethnicity, space need to be um improved. Everyone needs to be part of the tech for social, for the social good movement. So you need to have people of all walks of life in order to build for all walks of life. So it has been a challenge and I'm sure many of the other speakers today can speak to how to improve that component, but that is definitely an area that needs help. Ok. So the numbers market trends. So I'm not gonna read through each and every one of these. Um If you'd like the deck after the fact, feel free to reach out. But broad strokes. Um 70% of Gen Z and millennials believe a branch should have a purpose in a recent study featured by Forbes. Those consumers are 4 to 6 times more likely to purchase, protect and champion socially conscious companies. Um Th this group is getting bigger and bigger. Um By the day millennials surpass boomers uh a couple of years ago and they continue to do so and then that wealth transfer is happening. So $30 trillion in wealth is going to transfer from boomers to millennials over the next 30 years.

Um Basically, we're becoming more digitally savvy as a society, we're becoming more purpose driven, more socially conscious. And another big one on here is our racial uh landscape is is currently changing in this country. So if you look at the last bullet point, um overall population growth slowed substantially over the past decade, but the number of multicultural Americans more than doubled. So you have to look at what the makeup of that audience is to fully understand who you're engaging with.

So Richard Branson, one of my favorites founder of Virgin Group says, I think people who work for businesses are proud of businesses that they work for. They work that much harder. And therefore, I think turning your business into a real force for good is a good business, is good business sense as well. People wanna do more social good, it's good for business in so many different ways. So the business trends that exist um globally, there are about 1.35 million tech start ups around the world presently and that number is expected to continually grow. Um The need to reach new customers is the key driver in growth and investors are are looking at this, they're liking this because they say companies should work for the benefit of all stakeholders, not just shareholders. So it's putting purpose and profits together, but putting purpose above profits.

And then 85% of executives believe that purpose drive companies drive profits. So that number has also shifted as more executives are starting to see the financial gains from just doing good. So lots of start ups um are looking to reach new audiences. Investors and top execs agree that socially conscious companies can garner users as well as profits. Tech for good is the intentional design development and use of digital technologies to address social challenges. We know this, it is the combination of the most powerful and flexible tool we've ever had and good design approaches that are user led and test driven. Basically consumers and users shape the technology that we create or they should so designed to help solve the problem, strive to understand your audience so that you can meet them where they are at whether that's technically or figuratively. Um Tech alone is never the answer, but tech is a necessary part of solving most big and complex problems. Oh, sorry about that. So I want to talk a little bit about the company I work for. Um it's not gonna be an informer infomercial, I promise. Um But Stave just recently won best of show at Innovate spring 2020 I'm gonna show you a little bit why? So at Fave, we built uh proprietary technology that help solve challenges with balancing spending, saving and giving and helps consumers with our technology.

So it was designed for users by users. And the goal was to help them achieve financial wholeness um by living giving and saving with purpose. So those three components help with their overall financial wholeness. Um We also equip nonprofits and credit unions with the tools to better engage their uh donors members and community. So everybody wins. So the problem. So we did a lot of research. We went through three rounds of research. Um One of the initial rounds of research focused heavily on the end user. And we looked at, you know, what was the financial landscape who was using it uh using different tools and how they were using it. And the problem that we found were people mainly millennials and Gen Z um were seeking financial freedom. So they didn't have a lot of confidence. Uh they wanted to do, do better and they didn't necessarily um do a great job at budgeting and they were just looking for the right solution. So they also wanted to know that they were making a difference because I mean, think about some of the stats that we reviewed earlier, that is a part of um these individuals lives. It is an important factor.

So our research showed us that these individuals had these key concerns. I need to better control my finances. Um show me that, you know, me and make me trust you. I know what I want and I want it now, don't make me work for it. And I want to know that I'm making a difference. So these were things that were reinforced um as we were doing our research and then as we did the, the next few rounds, um we learned a little bit more, but those were the key tenets of what we were trying to build for. Um We also noticed in the marketplace giving had changed. So previously, um most givers uh were going to large events, charity events um giving with cash and check and these were mostly boomers. Um Now that's, that's kind of changing. So people are a lot more comfortable with remote giving digital giving, utilizing credit cards and millennials are givers. They're inherent givers. They um want to give to charities that they care about many of which um very locally based and they want to see the impact of what what they're doing. So we built space.

Um the best way to think about it is, you know, it's Mint Acorn digit United Way and Venmo all in one app. So our solution um current apps address only one or a few aspects of personal financial management. Um You probably have heard of many of these brands, but the spade brings it all together into one single app. So enabling uh consumers to get an aggregate view of their bank accounts um across multiple banks, not just one and they can track and analyze their spending, save for their future pay down debt and then reach charitable giving goals in one single app. It uses um roundup and percentage gives if you're interested, take a look. Um but the results of what we have done gives the end user a level of control um choice in how they're doing things and the confidence to transform their spending and they're transforming their spending for good for themselves and for the world. So with that said, um t alone is never the answer, we can solve complex problems. And if we don't put people at the heart of the business, we're not gonna achieve as much as if we were to be thinking about tech for good.

Because tech for good is about solving problems while focusing on meaningful outcomes aside from profits. And remember, the outcomes of tech for social good are more important than the mechanisms. Um I'm, I'll end with this quote um because I kind of love it and I'm connected to Erin.

Um If you aren't fully embracing the purpose, economy by now and transforming your entire organization, you're gonna join the likes of Blockbuster Radioshack, Sears, Kodak and Tower Records. So I'll leave you with that to think about. And um I wanted to give you a few minutes to ask any questions that you may have, but I will put this screen up and all right, any questions anybody? Ok, cool. All right. Well, if any of you have any, any thoughts or wanna connect on linkedin, I'm happy to do so. Um if you want a copy of the deck, please email marketing at spa dot IO and I'll be happy to share it with you. Um Otherwise that's all I have for you today and I appreciate you taking the time to join me to hear about tech for good. Hopefully, it's motivated you to look into it if you have not yet done. So, thanks Alex Mary, Natalie Michelle, Sarah Catherine, everybody. Thank you so much. Appreciate it.
